Obituary
Shortly after his 102nd birthday, William (Bill) Kalyniak passed away quietly on February 25, 2023.
Bill was born January 31, 1921, the second youngest, to his parents Nick and Anne (Kuz) Kalyniak.
Bill married Lena Mushumanski June 3, 1950. They began their homestead in the RM of Silver Creek, a year after their marriage. They built their house with the help of family and friends, worked hard to save enough money to begin a family of their own. Together, even though the work was difficult, they managed to keep humour and fun in their lives.
Bill loved to “tinker”. He learned how to repair the machinery on the farm and keep it in good working condition. He also had an inventive mind and built many time saving devices to help with his day-to-day workload. Some of his inventions even made it to the Western Producer newspaper. That inventive mind stayed with him all his life.
Even though Bill had a limited education, he was able to grow his farm, keep his books in good order, and prospered with his farming.
If a neighbor or family member needed a helping hand, Bill was selfless. He helped all who needed or asked and didn’t seek anything in return. He passed this generous trait on to his children. He was a great role model to all and was fair in all his endeavors. Bill passed all he knew to his children. Up until his passing, he freely gave advice, and was affectionately known as “King Pin” to his kids.
In the early 1980’s, Bill and Lena decided to retire from farm life, and build a house in Russell. The home he built was tailored to their needs, including a “shop” where he could continue tinkering in, and a large garden. He did much of the work on the house himself. He continued to part-time farm, and assisted those that rented his land with his knowledge and expertise in mechanics and farming. Bill helped his neighbors in Russell with blowing snow, or the use of his shop. He became the “neighbor to go to…”
Both he and Lena took many trips to the USA, Alberta and the West coast, they even spent their 50th anniversary on a European Cruise to Greece, Turkey and the Ukraine. They enjoyed the travel but would always be the happiest at home. He loved to go fishing, golfing and playing cards with friends and family. He and Lena spent many hours in the church basement, working and playing bingo. Through bingo, they helped raise money for different projects in the church and community, as well as giving a helping hand (bursary money) to a lucky graduate to further their education.
After suffering a devastating spinal stroke, Bill worked hard in rehab until he was able to come home to Russell. Even though he had to use a walker, he still mowed his lawn, and worked in his shop. He purchased a scooter to cruise the streets of Russell and did so every day in the summer. He continued to do daily exercises, up until the time he had to go into Personal Care at the age of 100.
Bill made lifelong friends, and dearly missed those friends and relatives as the time passed. In January 2022, he unexpectedly lost his wife Lena. His children attempted to fill the void with many visits, however the pain from the loss was difficult for him.
Bill was predeceased by his wife, Lena (Mushumanski), son-in-law Yvan Blanchette, sisters Julia (Dufrat), Minnie (Derkach), Pauline (Shwaluke), and brother Mike.
Left to mourn him, are his children Larry (Pam McFarlane), Mary-Ann, Diane, and his grandson Jeff. Also left to mourn are his many nieces, nephews and friends.
Thank you to Dr. W. Pieterse. You had to endure many phone calls and texts, and you did so with kindness and patience.
Thank you to Fr. Jay Korban for the visits, and the many blessings you gave dad.
Thank you to the staff of the Russell PCH. You kept him comfortable and well taken care of. Thank you to Ed Majors, who was his roommate in Russell. Dad enjoyed all the talks you had with him.
Thank you to all the friends and family who came to see dad. Dad really looked forward to any visits and was appreciative of all the time you took out of your day to see him.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Russell PCH. The staff do so much with so little.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Russell ,Manitoba .
Dad,
My mind still talks to you
My heart still looks for you
My soul knows you are at peace.
