William Schroeder Obituary
William Albert (Bert) Schroeder was born in Weidenfeld, Manitoba on December 9, 1937. He is pre-deceased by his parents Wilhelm and Anne Nee (Friesen) Schroeder and his brother Alan Schroeder.
William was raised on a farm near Altona, Manitoba and he and his brother Alan attended a one-room elementary school. His parents rented another farm outside Austin, Manitoba.
During those years at the small school, the children chipped in for a football to play with. Books were limited and hard to come by, but he enjoyed reading.
After high school graduation in June 1955, William’s neighbor got him a job as a teller at the Bank of Montreal in MacGregor, Manitoba where he worked for 1 ½ years until his transfer to Schreiber, Ontario. After 1 ½ years he took his accrued holidays at the bank and moved back to Manitoba. William enrolled at Manitoba’s Teacher’s College in Tuxedo for 1 year. He and his friend Bob Thompson secured jobs teaching in Cross Lake Manitoba.
While he was teaching in Cross Lake, he met Eva Beardy. They were married on June 21st, 1962. During their marriage they lived in Cross Lake for 2 years and were blessed with their first child Kenneth who was born in Norway House, Manitoba. They later moved to Austin, Manitoba and their second child Michael was born in Carberry, Manitoba. He taught education for 1 year at a one-room school at Forestville, Manitoba.
In 1964 he moved his family to Wabowden, Manitoba to teach where they lived in a one-room teacherage. He went back to summer school every year for 3 years and received his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education majoring in History and Geography. While going to summer school he worked at the Assiniboia Downs as a cashier. During the summer of 1966 they welcomed their third child Roger who was born at the old Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
William taught all grades in Wabowden, Manitoba. In 1971 they welcomed their fourth child Gerald who was born in The Pas, Manitoba and 2 years later their fifth child and only daughter Dorothy was born in Thompson, Manitoba.
William’s passion was travelling where he ventured on many summer vacations with his family from coast to coast. Later he and his wife travelled to several countries making new friends. For many years he volunteered for the Wabowden Fire Department, ambulance driver, served on the community council, coached and played hockey.
His major accomplishments were teaching all five of his children and that he development of the Grade 5 trip and BUNTEP Program.
William is predeceased by his parents Wilhelm and Anne, his brother Alan, brother-in-law David Armstrong. He leaves to mourn in his passing, his beautiful wife of 63 years Eva Schroeder, children Ken (Kelly), Michael (Karen), Roger (Marilyn), Gerald (Pam) and Dorothy (Mark), grandchildren Mike Jr. (Anne), Tyrone (Raeleen), Kyle and Evan. Great grandchildren Cam, Tristan, Peyton, Cara, Kayleigh, Caylee, Carlee and Kian.
A Celebration of Life Service for William Albert Schroeder will be held at November 22, 2024 at 1:00pm-3:00pm at Eternal Grace Funerals located at 1111 Logan Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations made to Parkinson’s Canada.
