Obituary
With heavy hearts, the family of the late Willem van der Voort announce his passing at the General Hospital in Regina, SK on November 27, 2024, at the age of 79 years.
Willem was born in Oldebroek, Holland on August 2, 1945, to parents Derk-Jan and Hendrikje (nee Prins) van der Voort. Willem admired his Dad for his quiet nature, strong work ethic, and love for farming and he thoroughly enjoyed his mother’s baking. Willem had 3 brothers and 3 sisters. After attending elementary school, Willem went on to study at the School of Agriculture for another few years while he became more involved in the farming operation with his Dad. As Willem continued to farm with his Dad, it wasn’t long before he noticed a pretty, young lady milking cows for the neighbours. Willem, naturally shy, was encouraged by his Father to help this pretty, young lady bring the heavy milk cans to the road for her. Soon after, a courtship started and on February 21, 1967, he married the love of his life, Sophie Hulshof. Together they started their own small dairy farm, milking 6 cows and were blessed with the birth of eight children. Eventually the farm grew to a 60 milk cow herd with an on-farm cheese making business. Since their farm was on very sandy soil it was very dependent on timely rains. During a very dry summer and struggles to keep the farm afloat, they realized they needed more than human strength to carry the burdens of life. The Lord led into their lives the help and teaching of true Christian friends, through this by God’s Word, they realized the need for a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. From that time on, the Lord Jesus Christ became their personal Saviour and He was the centre of their daily lives.
When the milk quota system was introduced in Holland, the milking herd was cut in half because of government regulations. This made it extremely difficult to support the family and left no hope for the future of the farm. In April 1988, they emigrated to Camrose, AB, Canada to start over again. Willem was in his glory now; hard work was fruitful again and with God’s blessing, he was able to see the family and farm flourish. In 2006, he decided that it was time for him to really slow down and the dairy farm in Camrose was sold. The farming operation was continued as a grain farm in Buchanan, SK, where he enjoyed his new role as “retired” farmer.
Farming was his life so naturally he helped out on the farm as long as he was able. On March 20, 2015, his dearly beloved wife, Sophie, passed away and he missed her deeply.
Willem will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him, but we are comforted with the knowledge that he is home with the Lord and together with Sophie again. Willem will be remembered for his devotion to his precious Lord and Saviour, the special love he had for his wife, his love for his children and grandchildren, his love for farming and animals, his love for singing and listening to hymns. Last but not least, we will also remember his enthusiasm for watching and predicting the weather – he was often more accurate than the meteorologists.
We would like to share one of Willem’s favourite Bible verses: 1 John 1:7 “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
Willem was predeceased by his parents, Derk-Jan and Hendrikje van der Voort; brothers, Hendrik-Jan, Engbert and Gerrit van der Voort; sister, Engelien Akster; wife, Sophie; and son-in-law, Teun Spronk.
He is survived by sisters, Alie Blaauw and Henny Pander; sons, Derk-Jan (Courtney) van der Voort and Rutger van der Voort; daughters, Anneke van der Voort, Dieneke Spronk, Hendriette (David) Bosma, Gera Weber, Willemien (Moses) Wright and Sophie (Dirk) Stolk; twenty- seven grandchildren: Ida, Willem, Johanna, Annie, Theodore, Elsbeth, Maksym, Paul, Simon and Nadiya van der Voort, Jan and Willem Spronk, Gerben Bosma, Sophia (Derlyn) Fenninger, Arianne (Colin) Petker, Hannah and Liezel Bosma; Cameron, Joshua, Anna, Kara and Owen Wright, Margaret, Henrik, Derrik, Peter and Daniel Stolk; and 3 great grandchildren: Landon and Naomi Fenninger, Walter Petker.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 6, 2024, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK, with Pastor Darrell Vion officiating. Interment will follow at the Elim Lutheran Cemetery, northeast of Buchanan, SK.
