Wayne MacBean (Bun) passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Bun was deeply loved by his entire family and several close friends who «adopted» Bun as he continued to live independently at Regina Beach. Bun was devoted to his wife, Shirley who passed away in 2013. Bun is also predeceased by his son, Scott; his son-in-law, John Argan; and brother Frank MacBean. Bun leaves to mourn three daughters: Duna Bayley (Dale), Judi Argan and Sherri MacBean Gross (Tim), daughter-in-law Sylvia MacBean, as well as his sister Duna Barber.
Bun had many grandchildren who have fond memories of «Gramps» showing them his «MUSEUM of EVERYTHING» in his basement, teasing and playing with them, taking his false teeth out and scaring them, and giggling along with them as if they had some private joke. He still giggled at 91 years young! Dad and Gramps never failed to find humor and joy in watching his kids, grandkids and his thirteen great grandkids. His grandchildren who loved him deeply include: Heather Leitner(Cory), Jesse Bayley, Pam McSweeny-Stafford (Joe), Scott MacBean (Laura), Morganne Lehmann, Doug MacBean, (Kaitlyn), Bailey Davis (Eric), Logan Mason (Mike), Mick Argan (Michelle), Sydney Gross(Tynan), Elliot Gross (Zane) and Sam Gross (Isaac). Bun had a special place in his heart for his great-grandchildren: Kiera, Connor, MacKenzie, Cullen, Lachlan, Lily, Oscar, Lilly, Evie, Scarlett, Louisa, Thomas and Madeleine.
Bun will be missed as well by his «coffee» buddies at Regina Beach. They were a sustaining factor in helping Bun after Shirley died. Bun’s family greatly appreciates the companionship they provided, as he often talked about Joe and the guys with fondness and how «they solved most of the problems of the world» over morning coffee. Bun had great neighbours, Sandy and Lew, and Elaine and Dean. They were always helping him out, feeding him and making sure he was well and safe. By the way, his favourite food was «chocolate cake» (Thanks Sandy).
Bun grew up with the kind of freedom, independence and adventurous spirit that was a theme throughout his life. Born at Grey Nuns Hospital in Regina on Easter Sunday, his nickname is derived from being born on the same day the Easter «bunny» makes his appearance. As a kid at Sask. Beach, he was often out on the water, sailing, swimming and just enjoying life with friends Boo, Bones and Grassy (everyone had a nickname!) His children, Scott, Duna, Judi and Sherri were incredibly fortunate to spend their summers at the lake and, like their Dad, treasured the freedom, fun and friendships the beach had to offer. Bun moved to Saskatoon to begin a job with Saskatchewan Government Telephones, eventually moving to Regina where he finished his career. Though he worked for a telephone company, he was an engineer at heart. Nothing (seriously, nothing) was beyond fixing! He was tenacious about figuring out how things worked and didn’t work. He even took apart an old car and put it back together when he was young. As kids we learned from Dad to build tree houses and the odd bedroom in the basement; we learned to wire an old lamp; how to run wires throughout the house to hook up everything; how to swim; how to NOT chase after errant beachballs the wind was blowing out to the middle of the lake; how to dig a basement; how move an outhouse and…how to turn off the damn lights.
After moving to Regina Beach, Shirley and Bun took many trips with friends seeking out the warm weather of Arizona, along with travel tours to Alaska, the east coast, across Canada and to Nashville. Dad also was fiercely proud of his ancestry. He bought his son and each of his son-in-laws MacBean tartan neckties to ensure they were appropriately dressed for family dinners. He took a trip to Scotland and searched out his roots, loving every minute roaming the highlands.
Dad and Mom had great parties, great friendships and supported the community through the Lions Club, Cross-Country Ski Club and Regina Beach Golf Club. Dad could often be seen sitting on his back deck enjoying the sun or driving his little green truck around the beach. He loved his backyard – his “bit of paradise” he would say. Both Mom and Dad were Canada Day Grand Marshals waving at the Regina Beach crowd from their little truck. Dad loved music, from Bing Crosby and Patsy Cline to all those many PBS music specials. For some reason as kids, we never seemed to have a radio in the car, but that didn’t stop Dad from teaching us to singalong to «Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and smile, smile, smile». I’m sure our friends wondered how we knew all these old songs from the 40’s! Even in his last days in the hospital he was singing along to Slim Whitman’s «Take me home again Kathleen».
Dad was there for his kids and helped us through some difficult times as we experienced the challenges and sorrows life tends to throw at us. He played a significant role in helping us move forward.
Special thanks to the nurses and staff in 3A at the Pasqua Hospital for their care of Dad in the end. Bun chose not to have a funeral instead hoping friends and family will perhaps smile and even chuckle as they think of the time they spent with him. He was a gentle and kind man and will be greatly missed.
So, Dad, as Vera Lynn would sing…»I’ll be seeing you – in all the familiar places, That this heart of mine embraces – all day through…»
