Obituary
With great sadness, the family of the late Wasyl (Bill) Prekaski announce the passing of their father, brother, uncle, Gido and Great Gido. Wasyl passed away at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre, Yorkton, SK, on Tuesday, June 4, 2024, at the age of 81 years.
Wasyl, the 3rd oldest of 7 children, was born to Nick and Mary (nee Bugera) Prekaski on November 25, 1942, at the Preeceville Union Hospital, Preeceville, SK. He attended Kopje School and then Sturgis Composite High School. In 1960, Wasyl left home seeking employment. His first job was fighting forest fires with Forestry in The Pas, MB. He then worked at Churchill, MB, until freeze up. Wasyl worked for the Bridge and Building Gang for CNR doing rough carpentry work around The Pas, Snow Lake, and Flin Flon, MB. In 1964, he worked for Inco Mines in Thompson, MB, from January to September. In the fall of 1964, he started driving truck for A&S Transport in Stenen, SK.
He married Jane Bazansky, daughter of George and Anne Bazansky on October 9, 1965. While residing in Stenen, they raised four children: Shawn, Shawna, Sheldon, and Shirley until parting ways in November of 1993. Wasyl moved to Yorkton and continued driving for A&S Transport until his retirement. After he retired from A&S, he did long haul with his son Sheldon and enjoyed telling stories about the many places he travelled.
Wasyl loved taking his family camping and fishing; he also enjoyed providing for his family by duck, geese, and moose hunting. He liked listening to Ukrainian music and going to watch his grandchildren at their Ukrainian dance competitions and concerts. He very proudly attended each of his grandchildren’s graduation ceremonies and liked watching them play hockey and ball. Wasyl also enjoyed watching curling.
Wasyl was predeceased by his father, Nick Prekaski in 1963; his mother, Mary Prekaski in 2007; his sister, Dolly Prekaski in 1950; and his grandson, Dillon Nokinsky in 2020.
He will be lovingly remembered by his children: Shawn Prekaski of Canora, SK, Shawna Prekaski of Yorkton, SK, Sheldon Prekaski of Stenen, SK, and Shirley (Harvey) Nokinsky of Swan Plain, SK; grandchildren: Amy Prekaski, Amber (Scott) Motilaga, and Chantel Nokinsky; great-grandchildren: Dusty Nokinsky and Abel Motilaga; brothers: Edward (Sally Sibley) Prekaski of Yorkton, SK, Harry (Bonnie) Prekaski of Stenen, SK, and Jack (Joan) Prekaski of Tumbler Ridge, B.C.; sisters: Elizabeth Prekaski of Yorkton, SK, and Irene (Wayne Wenarchuk) Oneschuck of Canora, SK; and nieces: Penny Nabozniak, Tracy Kowal, and Lisa Derkatch as well as many cousins and friends.
A private celebration of life graveside service will be held in Wasyl’s memory.
