Obituary
Walter Bosiak passed away peacefully at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre on February 9th, 2023 after a short illness. Walter was born at Keld on January 20, 1925, the seventh of eight children to Wasyl (William) Bosiak and Mary Smelski. He was the last surviving member of his family.
Walter lost the love of his life, Zonia (Hrynkiw) on September 25, 2015 and chose to continue to live on his own until his death. He was independent until the end, so much so that in 2018, after living at Lorray Manor for almost two years, and at the age of 93 declared “I’d like to move out into my own apartment, there are too many old people in this place!”
Walter moved into an apartment on Main Street North and lived independently until a few weeks before his death. He was a talented artist, woodworker, handyman and hobbyist. There wasn’t a lamp he wouldn’t try to fix, a bench or table he couldn’t build or a repair project he wouldn’t take on. His most recent hobby was making tiny birdhouses, and at last count he had completed over 100.
Walter was a successful businessman, starting a Case Dealership in Dauphin at the tender age of 25. He owned and operated B&B Farm Supply for over 25 years, and after selling the dealership began dabbling in real estate. Following a short career in real estate he moved into a position with MB Housing and retired at the age of 70.
Walter loved building things. He built his own home and lived in it until Zonia’s death, built a beautiful log cabin at Lake Dauphin (and a smaller cabin for Zonia next door as a birthday gift), a house for his son, remodelled his daughter’s house and was the general contractor during the building of Boze’s Bodyshop. He also remodelled several commercial buildings in Dauphin and spent one summer many years ago remodelling a small house in Dauphin so he could provide his son a summer job.
Walter’s favourite spot was at the lake. After building the cottage in 1963 he spent every summer working at the lake. He was a constant blur of action. He couldn’t sit still. He loved to work with wood, in the garden, and to spend time on his tractor. Walter loved the farm as a boy and lived his dream by having a small hobby farm at the lake for many years.
Walter would do anything for his family and was especially generous with his one and only grandson, Brant. He constantly asked about Brant, and provided much love, advice, and guidance to him over the years. Brant will miss the “chats with Gigi” and the tank of gas he got every time he came home for a visit.
Walter is survived by his son David, his wife Maggie, grandson Brant and his partner Allison. Walter is also survived by his daughter Terry and husband Darian Bercier. The family would like to thank Dr. Matheson and the staff at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre for the compassionate care he received. Walter had requested that no ceremony be held upon his death. If friends so desire a donation to the Dauphin and District Community Foundation or Cancer Care Manitoba would be appreciated.
