Virginia was a wonderful woman known as «Gin» to
most of her family and friends. Her favourite name though,
was Nanny. Her 9 grandchildren were the joy of her life. She
always had time for them. Whether it was taking them places,
babysitting or playing card and board games with them like she had
with her own mother.
Gin had 2 careers in her life. She taught at Argyle
school for a number of years. Her students even included a
couple of her siblings. She spent 29 years at the
convenience store in Middle East Pubnico. Working first for
Alban Amiro then his son John and finally for Joe and Lorna.
The only worries she ever had at the store was when it became
computerized.
Before she could retire, unfortunately, her husband of almost
40 years passed away. Virginia and Vernon went to many
Lion’s events around the province and made life long friends
with many people. They loved to go for drives and explore
the back roads and communities.
In her spare time, she loved to read and work on puzzles in
the newspaper. She spent many years as a Lionette and her
baked goods were prized by many who attended their annual Christmas
bake sale. They didn’t want to chance not getting them, so
instead put in orders for her tarts and gumdrop cakes.
She and Lucille Goodwin were longtime caretakers of the East
Pubnico cemetery.
She spent 10 years as caregiver to her mother until her
passing 9 years ago. Then the most amazing thing happened to
her 2 weeks later, Alvin Churchill. He made her last years
joyful. He welcomed her family into his life and every
December they would host a family gathering for her siblings and on
New Year’s day, their children and grandchildren, with
Mom’s rappie pie, vinegar tarts and mincemeat Christmas
pudding.
She will be greatly missed by all who had the
privilege to know her.
