Violet Lorraine Mercer (nee Crocker) passed away at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital in St. John’s, NL on April 8th, 2024 at the age of 78 years old. Predeceased by beloved husband William Mercer, parents Rowena and Wesley Crocker, and sister-in-law Joan Crocker. Leaving to mourn two sons Daniel (Dawn) and David (Kellie); six grandchildren Ian, Ryan, Kaely, Matthew, Brendan and Keeran Mercer; two siblings, Donna Taylor and Alex Crocker and a number of family and friends.
Born in Harbour Grace on June 1st, 1945, Violet was the eldest of three children. She grew up listening to Elvis with her sister Donna and brother Alex, while also helping her mother bake bread, cakes, jam-jams and other favourite treats. With her father Wes, the goal judge, she enjoyed watching the Cee-Bees hockey team play while also hosting dozens of players at their home as boarders, along with working twelve hour shifts in the summertime at the fish plant under the supervision of her Aunt Lydia.
Violet finished high school and soon after met her husband, William Mercer from Shearstown. They got married in 1965 and then moved to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia where Bill was stationed with the Royal Canadian Navy with their first child, Daniel. They moved back to Newfoundland and Labrador and after having their second child, David, settled in Clarenville as Bill had obtained employment with the Department of Forestry in the Provincial Government. During her thirty-five years living in Clarenville, Violet was a long-time volunteer with Girl Guides and St. Mary’s Anglican church, a dedicated supporter of Clarenville Minor Hockey, Clarenville Firettes, and Clarenville Air Cadets. She enjoyed working at White Hills and was a constant babysitter for over twenty years for some local families and her beloved six grandchildren.
Violet was extremely skilled at crochet, knitting, and sewing and took pride in her Clarenville home garden! She had dozens of recipes that she was proud to bake. Her favourite restaurant to visit was A&W and she liked to reminisce about old names and stories. She cared for animals throughout her life and that was reflected by her favourite shows and movies, such as “Hudson and Rex” and “Every Which Way but Loose”. Violet enjoyed travelling and was a reliable and steady driver. Three of her proudest moments in life were teaching her husband how to drive, when her son Dan got his pilot’s license before his driver’s license, and then driving behind her son David in a Toyota Corolla across Canada in 1998.
In recent years, Violet experienced a number of significant health challenges which she approached with a matter of fact attitude and hope for the best. She took things as they came and sought out simple pleasures such as watching television, playing Solitaire, doing crossword puzzles and visiting with family.
Visitation will take place at Fewer’s Funeral Home, Clarenville on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. Funeral service 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 11, 2024 at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Clarenville. Interment to follow at Clarenville Interdenominational Cemetery.
For those wishing to do so, donations in Violet’s memory can be made to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre in St. John’s.
