Obituary of Vernon Lester Whynot
It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Vernon Lester Whynot, of New Germany, Lunenburg County, loving husband, father, grandfather and brother, at the age of 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 30, 2024, in Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.
Vernon was born on August 5, 1938, in Stanburne, NS. He was the second son of the late William and Lillian (Dimmell) Whynot.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 61 years, Nora (Gould), New Germany, formerly of Amherst; sons, Peter (Keith), Truro; Kevin (Christie), Bedford; grandson, Blake (Alysha) Whynot. Vernon is also survived by his brother, Alton Whynot (Susan), Beford; sister, Betty MacCullough (Arnold), Fredericton, NB; as well as extended family.
Besides his parents, Vernon is predeceased by a brother, Ronald Whynot, formerly of Stanburne; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Vernon started his career with CIBC at the age of 16. After many different locations, he achieved the position of Bank Manager. He also spent 2 years at CIBS’s teaching College in Toronto. He retired to New Germany in 1993 with his loving wife, Nora where they built their retirement home.
Vernon had many hobbies, including fishing, hunting, wood working and ATV’ing. He spent many happyt days at his hunting camp on Lynn Mountain. Everyone loved to receive gifts hand made by Vernon. He made a lot of the furniture in their home, most notable was a solid oak bedroom suite.
While enjoying ATV’ing, Vernon served two terms as President of Central Nova ATV Club. He was also a member of the Annapolis Valley Recreational Trail Association who developed Rails to Trails, from New Germany to Middleton, Nova Scotia. He raised a tremendous amount of funds through government grants for trail work. Due to all of his hard work and devotion he was nominated and received the Volunteer of the Year for Nova Scotia in 2013. He was very proud of this recognition. He will be missed by his family and many friends.
At Vernon’s request, there will be no visitation or service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of choice.
