Obituary
We are very saddened to announce the passing of our Beloved Mom, aged 89, on January 20, 2024. She was a Mom, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Sister, Aunt, and friend to many.
Mom was the daughter of the late Thomas and Florence (nee Barrett) Roberts and step-mother, the late Mildred (nee Legge) Roberts. She was predeceased by her sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn (nee Roberts) and Bill Hillier; three siblings in infancy, Emily, William, and John; as well as Selwyn and Gloria’s Father, Alfred Welsh.
She is survived by her two children, Selwyn Welsh (Bernice) and Gloria Charsley (Ken). She was Nanny to Scott Welsh (Jackie), Sheryl Pardy (Neal) and Stephen Campbell (Tanya).She was Great-Nanny to Ethan Campbell, Quinn Campbell, Julia Campbell, Hayley Pardy, Dylan Pardy, and Liam Welsh (who called her Nanny Velma); her sister Rosalind Hefford (Rod – deceased); brothers Howard Roberts (Barb), Orlando Roberts (Fran), and Rex Roberts (Carolyn); as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Mom was an employee of Woolco/Walmart for the last 33 years of her working life up to her retirement at 77 years of age. She enjoyed her working life and meeting so many people. She was a quiet yet sweet lady and always enjoyed company. She was an avid knitter and knitted for Nonia for many years starting at the age of 10. She loved to read books of Newfoundland and Biographies.
We’d like to thank the staff at Shag Rock Manor, Whiteway for caring for Mom during her stay, the staff of the Private Josiah Squibb Memorial Pavillion, her sister Rosalind for Mom’s many visits, her good neighbour and friend in St. John’s, Mary Ellen Dunphy who helped Mom out when needed and her long-time friend Bob Coombs, who drove her to Church on Sundays.
Mom grew up in Whiteway, married and moved to Islington for a few years before moving to Dunville to be with her husband, where they raised their family. She later moved to St. John’s and lived there for 43 years before returning to Whiteway as a resident of Shag Rock Manor at the age of 86.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 pm.
Funeral service will be held at the Anglican Parish of The Epiphany, Heart’s Delight, on January 24, 2024, at 2:00 pm, with the Rev. Verna Chislett officiating. Interment to follow at St. George Martyr Anglican Church Cemetery, Whiteway.
No flowers by personal request. Donations in Mom’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
