The family is saddened to announce Lynette’s passing at Credit Valley Hospital, Mississauga, on February 9, 2024 at the age of 68.
Born in Carbonear, NL, as the fourth child to Ada and Lloyd Powell, they moved to St. John’s when she was 10 years old. Lynette was incredibly intelligent, excelling in her nursing program at MUN and winning the Gold medal for her class. She later decided to go to medical school and became an anesthesiologist. She worked in the ER at Sunnybrook in Toronto. With an adventurous spirit, Lynette participated in the Goethe Institute scholarship in Germany as well as spending 2 years living and working in New Zealand, which she recalled fondly to us until her last days. Lynette spent years working as the ship doctor on Norwegian Cruise Lines where her favourite ports were San Juan and St. Maarten. Lynette finally settled in Toronto with a career in Pain Management but always enjoyed her trips back ‘home’ to the rock to visit her brothers and their families. Lynette retired at age 66 to focus on her valiant battle against cancer.
Lynette enjoyed learning to belly dance and performed with her dance school over the years under the name Aisha which was chosen by her with her dance friends. Lynette was a lifelong curling fan, with particular interest in team Newfoundland, and team Canada. She became a dedicated Toronto Argonauts fan later in life attending home games and cheering them on through their last three Grey Cup wins. Lynette enjoyed gardening on her condo’s generous terrace where she also hosted bridal showers for her nieces. She loved the beach, and sitting poolside with her latest novel and a Caesar. She was a voracious reader but also loved competition TV shows with singing and dancing. A big Harry Potter fan (she read all the books first) and Lord of the Rings (she read all the books years ago), she absolutely believed in ‘majick’. She loved steak and chocolate cake with raspberries, Miss Vickie’s chips and Strewn chardonnay. She also always loved cooking, which she did right up to the end for her family even though cancer left her G-tube dependent and unable to eat orally for the last two years. Lynette loved animals, owning rabbits and hamsters through her years; but most of all loved her late cat, Kirby.
Predeceased by her loving parents: Ada and Lloyd.
Leaving to mourn, her brothers: Ken (Diana), Lloyd (Janet), best friend and sister: Dianne (Gary). She will be missed painfully by all of her nieces, nephews, and their partners: Jamie (Nancy), Erin (John), Valerie, Lesley (Johan), Lyndsey (Mike), Alison (Kevin), Colin (Ari), Elizabeth (Jason); as well as great nieces and nephews: Matthew, Ashleigh, Jack, Katherine, Will, Max, Jake, Bronsen, Sawyer, Adalyn, Carter, Brielle, Lucas and Quinn.
Funeral service at Bethany United Church, 2 Church Street, Carbonear at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.
Interment at Interfaith Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy, donations in her memory may be made to The Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre, 300 Prince Philip Drive, St. John’s, NL, A1B 3V6 or Bethany United Church, 2 Church Street, Carbonear, NL, A1Y 1A9.
