It is with profound sorrow and broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved son, Tyler Barclay Dunlap, who was born on April 15, 2008, in Vancouver and who left us far too soon on November 4, 2024. Tyler’s radiant spirit and boundless enthusiasm for life touched everyone who had the privilege to know him.
Tyler is deeply mourned by his parents, Karen Dunlap (née Watson) and Greg Dunlap, of Vancouver; his treasured Uncle Brian («Bunny») Watson, Aunt Dana, and cousins Sage, Hailey, and Tegan; grandparents Paul and Doreen Watson; and his loyal dog, Barclay, who was by his side along with his parents to the very end. In Toronto, he is survived by his cherished Uncle Nigel, Aunt Holly, Uncle David («Blue») Dunlap, Aunt Liya, and cousins Ely and Wesley; grandparents David Dunlap and Pamela Brickenden, as well as his grandmother Margriet Dunlap, who predeceased him. Tyler also leaves behind his godparents, Peter and Lara Neal, godsisters Hannah, Rebecca and Bridget, his newly found biological grandmother, Marlene, and his loving girlfriend, Atrisa.
Tyler’s zest for life was evident to everyone he met. He was an avid athlete, playing countless seasons of hockey and baseball, enjoying many winter weekends at Whistler skiing with his parents and his best buddy, Marcus, and most summer weekends on the family boat – traditions that became cherished family rituals. Tyler was known as a ‘storyteller’ in fact the family boat was named ‘storyteller’ as an ode to Ty! One story he didn’t always want us to share was that we gave him his middle name, Barclay, because we conceived our beautiful boy in Barclay Sound, BC.
Summers at the family cottage on Georgian Bay were filled with family, friends and memories, especially foosball and ping pong tournaments, afternoons in the sauna and plunging into the lake and jet surfing with his «Uncle Nigey.» Tyler always said that his extended family was his most precious possession – we will forever feel incomplete now that he is gone.
An inquisitive spirit with a deep passion for the natural world, Tyler was especially captivated by marine life. He dedicated himself to caring for his five fish tanks and outdoor pond, spending hours researching, curating, and perfecting these ecosystems with meticulous care.
Tyler’s empathy and sensitivity toward others were as remarkable as his energy and humour. He was a fierce friend and natural protector, always drawn to help those in need and offering support to friends and family. His hugs were an enveloping treasure, a warm embrace to get lost in. His kindness, mischievous humour, and joyful enthusiasm left an indelible mark on those who knew him.
He will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and everyone whose life he touched. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to an organization close to Tyler’s heart: www.vammr.org.
«Some people shine too brightly ever to be forgotten.»
