Muriel passed away peacefully at the Souris Personal Care Home on Saturday, March 11, 2023. She was predeceased by WJ and Gordon. She leaves to mourn, Murray, Pat (Rick), Ron, Shelley (Al), granddaughters Kelly (Brad Bamford) and their son Evan, Brittany (Ryan Maclellan) and their children, Brock and Kennedy.
Muriel Edith Wright was born March 20, 1928 and came to Carroll, Manitoba August 27, 1947 as a teacher. She taught grades 5-8 at Carroll School. At that time the population in Carroll was approximately 100. While a teacher at Carroll she would knit for all the new babies that arrived. She met and married William John Turner (born June 2, 1922) on October 28, 1950 in Boissevain, her hometown.
She joined the Carroll UCW in 1964 and enjoyed the goings on with the local ladies. Her passion was knitting and one winter held a knitting club to get the young and old involved in learning how to knit. She loved to knit slippers and mitts and give them to anyone who dropped by. She has knit well over 1,000 pairs of mitts and slippers for the Preschool Enrichment Program in Brandon. She would knit pairs of mitts and a number of slippers each Christmas for the kids at the preschool until her untimely stroke. Toques, mitts, slippers, scarves were always on her number eight knitting needles ready for someone who could use them. She did the mending for the Souris District Hospital for 13 years. She enjoyed the trek to Souris to pickup the mending and the following week would have it all sewn up. Many of nights she would rev up the sewing machine and go to work.
She thoroughly enjoyed her Friday trek with Gerry Budd to get groceries and ending the day with a coffee with the gals at the Chicken Chef. She loved to bake for the neighbours out in the rural community. If there were auction sales, teas, funerals or just someone feeling poorly she would be found baking tarts, cupcakes, pies and the like, donating or giving them to a neighbour in need. In the rural communities it was a part of life.
Muriel was an active Royal Canadian Legion member for a great many years. Muriel held a few jobs besides milking cows, raising chickens, turkeys, chasing horses, loading pigs and raising five kids (Gordon (deceased) born 1952, Murray born 1955, Patricia (Rick) born 1958, Ron born 1959 and Shelley (Al) born 1961.
She worked at the following part time; Statistics Canada Census taker 1956, 1966, 1971; Census Commissioner 1976, 1981; Agriculture Surveys 1974-1981; Manitoba Horse Breeders Secretary-Treasurer 1971-1988; Larry Robbins Garage bookkeeper 1982-1986; Murray Turner Auto Body bookkeeper 1990-2002; Souris-Glenwood Ag Society bookkeeper 1989-1991; Carroll Post Office & Store (spare) 1948-1996; Log Cabin vacation fill in for Laverne and Chris Christianson; Various Election Poll Officer (about a dozen); Manitoba-Saskatchewan Blonde Association Secretary 1989-1991; Auction Sale Clerk for Harold Kirbyson and Reg Lang.
For almost the past nine years, she has spent at the Souris Personal Care Home. The doctors, nurses, and aides all soon became her family; she had a memory like no other and was always interested in each of their lives. She loved you all and she could not have had better care anywhere. Your compassion, care and patience kept her going all these years. Even with the loss of her nine fingers, she never complained about her problems and persevered until the end.
She had many great friends who toted her around for a lot of years; Bev Logan, Shirley and Roy Logan, Gerry Budd, Bev and Norm Kalinski and Eleanor Hayes who went above and beyond to check in on her for us and did some reading or just visiting. We thank you all.
Mom, we hope you are surrounded by cats, bags and bags of wool and those number eight knitting needles.
A private graveside service was held at the Carroll Cemetery.
