Tony Caruso was a long time member of both the Merritt and Princeton communities with roots in the logging industry. Four years ago, he was diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). Tony succumbed to this disease on July 12, 2023, and wished for the family to publish the following letter, in his words, for him:
“I want to thank my family and the communities of Merritt and Princeton for all of the support you have given to me and my family. To my grandchildren, Kayla Van Roosbroeck (Matt McCrae), Mari-Jae Pelly (Jayden McGowan), AJ Pelly (predeceased), Kelsea Brown, Taylor Brown, Amika Caruso, Riley Rempel, Cali Schwarz, Lyla Schwarz, and Molly Schwarz, and my great grandchildren Jack, Daisy, Claire, Cruz, and Teddy, I want to tell you that life is short, no matter how old you are, so go and have fun. To my siblings Jim Caruso (Elaine), and Debbie Giles (Keith), I love you and thank you for everything you have done to support me and my wife through this journey. We could not have done it without you. Thank you to my friends Norm Houlind, Wayne Schindler, Bill Pierce, Jack Williams, Steve Nyeste, and Grace and Arlie for being here all the time to visit me. To my neighbors Anoop, Harpreet, Gurpreet and family for always being supportive and for lifting and carrying me when my family could no longer do it consistently. This helped to keep me at home for longer instead of in the hospital, which me and my family are so grateful for. So many people have supported us including our son-in-law Nathan Schwarz and my in laws Sharon Meckler (Jim Reimer), Bev and Jan Loos, Barry and Barb Meckler and Liana and Randy Grill. I want to thank GF Strong, the ALS Society of BC, the ALS Kamloops support group, Community nursing, Dr. Goetz, Dr. Ross, and the Gillis house staff, namely Corey, Muriel, and Mary, who provided me with support where it was needed. I also want to extend thanks to Grant Klassen from Nicola Motor Sports, Pat McCormack from Merritt Machine works, and James McNanny, and Rob Boley from Nomad for supporting me with equipment when my mobility ceased. Thank you Greg Johnson from 2nd Avenue Signs for the last minute decal on the greatest parade of my life. I want to thank Sandy Labermeyer for taking care of my feet when they caused me pain. To the Brewer family in Princeton, thank you for everything, you always made me feel like I was part of the family and I appreciate everything you did for me.
Mostly, I want to thank my girls Lisa Caruso (deceased) Tammy (Dan) Brown, Jamie (Heath) Shafer, and Mindy Caruso for always being here to help me and your mom. And my wife, Donna Caruso. I love you and I always will. The best thing I ever did with my life was to marry you.
There has been so much support, I have done lots, had several jobs, had fun when I was younger and used to think I was the toughest guy in town. I used to have a fleet of logging trucks, now I have a fleet of wheelchairs. I want a prescription for a new body. I would not wish this disease on anyone. Despite how terrible the disease has been and how it has impacted my body and my loved ones, I have had a good life and I am thankful to you all for being a part of it.”
-Tony Caruso
The Caruso family also wishes to thank everyone who has donated to the ALS Society and helped to raise awareness about ALS on Tony’s behalf, including Q101 and The Merritt Herald for always supporting this cause. While Tony lived with ALS, over $45,000 has been raised to help find a cure so other families don’t have to face the same heartache and loss that we have. Tony was loved by many people, and we are beyond proud to have called him our husband/dad/grandfather and great grandfather.
