**In Loving Memory of Thompson Joseph Tai Chuen Yang**
Thompson Joseph Tai Chuen Yang, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on July 25, 2024 at 10:58am in the Nanaimo Regional Hospital palliative care unit, in British Columbia. Born February 26, 1934 in Hong Kong, he was the oldest son of the late Capt. Paul K.Y. Yang and Pearl S.J. (Jiang) Yang.
Thompson’s early career was a trained heavy machine mechanic. It led him to the Merchant Marine that allowed him to do extensive travels around the world. Later years were marked by his dedication to photography, working in the Kodak photo processing room in Hong Kong. In 1972, he immigrated to Saint John, New Brunswick seeking better opportunities for his wife and three young children and to be with his brothers and their families. As a new immigrant, he juggled two demanding jobs at times working long hours to ensure a brighter future for his loved ones.
Thompson was cherished as a devoted family man, celebrated for his kindness, warmth, and remarkable handyman skills that made him a cornerstone for friends and family. His sense of humour and deep love for children were evident to all who knew him. The joy on his face while cradling a baby, whether his own children, nieces, nephews, or great-grandchildren was a testament to his caring nature.
Thompson was a man of integrity and a role model, teaching his children the values of hard work and honesty. He was a strong Christian and followed his Catholic faith. He made many friends through his bible study classes and his involvement and volunteering in the various church groups. His adventurous spirit, kindness, and dedication to family will be forever remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
In retirement, Thompson embraced his love of travel, exploring over 40 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and South America. He enjoyed numerous cruises, especially many maiden voyages with his siblings. He travelled with his family, church friends and participated in several pilgrimages with his church group, including the El Camino walk at the age of 84.
Thompson was deeply devoted to his wife, Ruby (Wong) Yang, and was a loving father to his children: son Peter (Estelle), daughters Teresa (Peter) Teschner, and Margarita (Andy) Payne. His legacy includes his grandchildren Alisha (Terry) Slattery, Amanda (Jatinder) Kular, Trevor Johnston, Michael, Emily, and Madeleine, and great-grandchildren Isla, Maeve, Aiden, and Halo.
Thompson’s siblings include Charles (Agnes), Tommy, sister in law (Adrienne), and Nola (Francis Li), and he leaves behind many nieces, nephews, brothers, and sisters-in-law.
He is predeceased by his sisters Elizabeth (Jack Wong), Margaret (David Poon), brothers Dr. John Yang (Maureen), Henry Yang and sister in law(Caroline).
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Thompson’s memory will continue to inspire and bring joy to those who knew and love him.
