Theresa Rebecca Rennie (née
Doiron) was born on February 18, 1933 in the Boudreau
homestead just below Église Ste.Croix in Pomquet, Nova
Scotia, to parents Joseph Harold Doiron and Amelia Ann Boudreau. She
died peacefully at home on the Rennie farm on July 9, 2023 surrounded
by her family.
The Church was a guiding light in Mom’s life and
her faith was deep, as it was for her mother before her. In her
younger years, Mom stopped by the Church each morning to sing in Latin
at the morning mass before heading off to school. She continued her
ministry in the Church well into her 80s, singing in the choir,
teaching religion classes, and preparing youngsters for the Sacrament
of Holy Communion for over 20 years.
Theresa is a direct descendent of Jean Doiron, one of the
original settlers of Acadie in Pisiquit in 1670. She took
immense pride in her Acadian heritage and promoted the culture at any
opportunity, a pride she instilled in her children and grandchildren.
She was the epitome of community and was a valued member of the
Pomquet Ladies Club, the Pomquet Carnival Committee, La Chorale de
Pomquet, La Société Historique de Pomquet, La
Fédération Acadienne de la Nouvelle-Ecosse, Le
Club des Ainés, Le Club
d’Alphabétisation, and La Sociéte de
dévéloppement de Pomquet. She was instrumental
in bringing Acadian status to Pomquet school, now École
Acadienne de Pomquet. She was a community contact for Pomquet on
‘La Marée Haute’ and ‘Bonjour
Atlantique’ on CBC Radio Canada for many years, where she
regaled the listeners with news of Pomquet and life on the Rennie
farm. For her tireless commitment to her community, Mom received many
awards, including the Queen Elizabeth Jubilee medal, presented to her
in her own home by the Honourable Peter MacKay in 2012. We
are so so proud of her many accomplishments! ‘Only a life
lived for others is a life worthwhile.’ (Albert
Einstein)
After completing her schooling in Pomquet, Mom moved to Truro
in 1952 to attend Normal College to become a teacher. She then
returned to Pomquet where she taught for three years. She married her
lifelong love, Raymond Rennie, on July 26, 1955, and they spent 55
years building a life at the Rennie farm on Pomquet Point. Together
they raised five children, and gave them a storied childhood, one of
adventure, hard work, faith, and most importantly, family. All of
their children continue to live in Pomquet. Theresa leaves behind Anne
Marie (Dave Kavanaugh) and their children, Krista, Matthew (Jan
MacDougall and their boys Rennie and Jackie), Laura, Kelly (Sunil
Jassi), and Liam; Joan (Ken White) and their child September; Joseph
(Karen Myette) and their children Blake and Asyah; Colette and her
daughter Ayana; and Paula (David Maillet) and their son Jacob. Her
grandchildren and great-grandsons will miss their Mommo
dearly.
Mom would describe herself as ordinary, but to us, she was
‘Mom-extraordinaire’. She was our guide
as we moved through life. She was an exceptional cook and baker, and
many enjoyed her scrumptious offerings, especially biscuits and jam.
She has left behind enough recipe books to fill a library! She was a
farmer, helping Raymond on the farm, from the hayfields to the making
of butter. She was our ‘go-to’, from
homework help to how to remove a nasty stain. She was the family
genealogist for both the Doiron and the Rennie lineages, possessed a
wealth of family and community information, could tell stories from
several generations past, remembered birthdays and anniversaries, and
could connect one Pomquet family to another in a matter of minutes!
She kept the family connected through visits, letters, phone calls,
annual Christmas cards with homemade ornaments, and in her later
years, through Facebook. She was well-loved by her many
nieces and nephews, and she loved them all. Mom’s smile and
her engaging personality made her a friend to many, from all walks of
life and from all ages. She enjoyed community gatherings, trips to
Ste. Anne de Beaupré, and visits to the eastern seaboard of
the USA to visit relatives. In her free time (which was rare) she
loved the challenge of a lexicon, Bingo with family, her gameshows,
and crocheting baby blankets, dishtowels, and many other
crafts.
Theresa was predeceased by her husband Raymond in 2011, her
parents Joseph Harold (1949) and Amelia (1994), brothers Leo (late
Rita), Thomas (late Leona), John (late Anita), Linus (late Yvonne),
Charlie (Yvonne), Peter (Martha), Joseph, Jimmie (Marcelline), sisters
Theresa and Rebecca (both in infancy), and Stella (late Robert Kopf,
late Gillis MacDougall); sisters-in-law Laura (late Merrill Lawton),
Betty (late Murray MacPhail/late Gerry Chymko), Margaret (late Billy
Chisholm), and Gina (late Firmin Venedam).
Besides her children and grandchildren, Theresa is survived
by her brother William (Mary Ann) and her baby sister Rita (Moses
Benoit), sister-in-law Marie Doiron (late Dominic), Alfred
‘Sonny’ Rennie (Marguerite) and numerous nieces
and nephews.
Mom was our rock, our inspiration, and we cannot imagine life
without her. She has left us with many gifts: our work
ethic, our sense of community, pride in a job well done, to help
whenever you can, family is everything, and enough happy memories to
last several lifetimes. Her motto, passed on to her by her mother, was
‘Fais le bien contre le mal.’
The family would like to thank Mom’s long-time
doctor, Dr. Cudmore. He, and Paula Diggins, both from
Antigonish Mediplex, have been wonderful friends to
Mom.
Thanks to Dr. Emily Rice and Shelly Robertson of Palliative
Care, VON nurses and staff, who have been a great support to the
family. And a special thanks to Charlene Mills, who became a ray of
morning sunshine for Mom over the past three months.
Visitation in C.L. Curry Funeral Home on Thursday, July 13
from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. Funeral mass on Friday, July 14 at 11 AM in
Église Ste-Croix in Pomquet, with Rev. Dennis Lamey
presiding.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the
‘Raymond and Theresa Rennie Memorial Bursary’ or
charity of choice.
