Obituary
Sylvia Josephine Cutajar (nee Jones), 85, sadly passed on Friday September 8, 2023. Sylvia was born in Stourport-on-Severn, England on April 2 1938, the oldest daughter to David Arthur and Edna Josephine Jones. She immigrated to rural Waldemar, Ontario at the age of 10. Growing up in Ontario — Waldemar and then Long Branch — Sylvia’s “claim to fame” came early on October 15, 1954. When a typical fall, rainy day turned into Toronto’s worst natural disaster — Hurricane Hazel — it touched her family’s life dramatically. Living on Island Road in Long Branch (Etobicoke), her father placed a ladder up to their roof and it was gratefully used by neighbours when the waters rose and lives needed to be saved. Just across the street, homes were washed out into Lake Ontario, taking many lives. During the night, on their rooftop, a fireman handed a premature newborn, who became known as “the orphan of the storm,” to Sylvia. Just a teenager, Sylvia held the four-month-old baby for many hours, until they were all rescued the next day. Sylvia was then able to hand the girl to a Red Cross worker.
Sylvia attended Marvel Beauty School and her lifelong career as a beautician also allowed her to touch many lives, caring for clients, including people living in long-term care homes.
Beloved wife to Peter Paul Cutajar (predeceased 2010) for 53 years and loving mother to Sandra, Stephen (predeceased 2016) and Susan (Gordon Ash). Proud Nanna to Peter Aaron and Emily Josephine. Loving family members include sister Rosemary Bugailiskis, Lila McKend (predeceased 2012), brother-in-law Michael, and sister-in-law Ann (John) Elliott. Predeceased brothers- and sisters-in-law were John, Spiro, Gianna, Costa, Dorval, Pat, Maria and Zaren. Sylvia was a proud aunt to 20 nieces and nephews in Canada and Malta.
The family is thankful for the excellent care Sylvia received the past 11 months from the many staff at Trillium Health Partners Mississauga Hospital and McCall Centre for Continuing Care.
Family and friends will be received at the Ridley Funeral Home, on Tuesday October 10, 2023 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Funeral Service will commence in the chapel at 11:30 a.m. Burial following at Springcreek Cemetery, Mississauga. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and Canadian Cancer Society. Messages of condolences may be placed at www.RidleyFuneralHome.com.
