Susan Trainor of Ancaster passed away quietly on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at St. Joseph’s Villa in Dundas, at the age of 69, after a prolonged battle with dementia.
Sue was the daughter of Roger and Margaret Lillie, niece of Liz Tennant, loving wife of 44 years of Rhod Trainor, and loving sister to Ron (Sue), Barb, and Ian (Sharon). Her fun-loving nature is survived in her three children Katie (Keeks), Michael (Meeks), and Kurtis, her son-in-law Tom, her two grandchildren Eli, and Hank, 12 nieces and nephews, and her favourite grand-dog Lucy.
Sue was a lifelong animal lover, having competed from a young age in horse show-jumping, growing up riding in Streetsville, Ontario. She went on to study at the University of Guelph, where she earned a B.Sc. in child studies and also met Rhod, and they married in 1980. After completing Teachers College, Sue initially worked as a preschool teacher before transitioning to full-time head of the household, kids team coach and caregiver. Sue and Rhod lived happily in Port Elgin and St. Thomas, before settling in Ancaster in 1990, where Sue developed her lifelong love and passion for golf and curling. She was an avid curler and partier at the Dundas Granite Curling Club. She extended her commitment to the sport through volunteering at the Hamilton Brier as a scorer, and coaching her sons in competitive curling throughout their childhood. A member at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club, she also spent many happy days playing golf with the ladies (unabashedly winning the A-Flight championships two years in a row), and extending her social time into book club and learning to play Mahjong. Her last birdie was on March 21st, 2021 on the par 3 4th hole of the short course, sinking a 12 foot hard-breaking putt from the back fringe at the height of the pandemic. Sue will be remembered for her characteristic day-long coffees with equal parts cream and coffee, having long chats on the phone, cheering and coaching her kids in sports, for her legendary one-time backyard keg-stand, but mostly for her social, competitive and fun-loving spirit, commitment to her family, and pride for her husband and children.
The Trainor family is very grateful to her friends and family who all came to visit her at the Villa, and in particular to the wonderful staff at St. Joseph’s for their care and compassion to Susan.
