Susan Fay Popiel (née Bright)
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing, on July 5, of our beloved Susan, age 54, following a multi-year battle with breast cancer.
Susan was born and raised in Minnedosa and educated at the University of Manitoba and the University of Guelph, where she received a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours), in Hotel & Food Administration in 1993. Following an extensive career in the hospitality industry, she spent the past 19 years as an HR consultant at the Manitoba Workers Compensation Board.
It was while working in the hospitality industry that Susan met the love of her life, Ron, whom she married on October 7th, 2000. Susan and Ron lived in Saskatoon before moving back to Winnipeg to start their family. Together, they raised two remarkable daughters, Natalie and Kate.
Susan loved music and was an accomplished singer. She also loved to travel, with a particular affinity for both the Hawaiian Islands and France, the latter of which she visited for the last time with her sister, Janet, in June of this year.
Susan had a special gift for making everyone she met feel welcome and appreciated. It was her ever-present grace, hospitality, and selfless love that made her and Ron’s home the natural gathering place for all manner of celebrations with family and friends.
Susan is survived by her daughters, Natalie and Kate; parents, Ray and Darlene Bright; siblings, Ken (Karie) Bright and Janet (Ian) BrightCorne; mother-in-law, Doris Popiel; sister-in-law, Cheryl (Mike) Janz; nieces and nephews, Hugh and Sadie Corne, and Brady, Paige and Meagan Janz; and friends too numerous to name. Susan was predeceased by her husband Ron, who passed in November of 2023. Susan will always be remembered for the happiness and joy she brought to those around her.
Susan shared her love of travel with Ron. We look forward to hearing about the adventures they are currently on when they visit us in dreams. We will tell them about ours, too.
A celebration of Susan’s life will be held at the Minnedosa United Church (48 Main Street South) at 2:00pm on Friday, July 26.
