A loving and devoted husband and Dad, died tragically on May 17, 2023, in Oak Bay, BC.
Steve was born September 1970 to Don and Freda (Hansen) Seekins and was raised on the Silver Valley, Alberta homestead. As the youngest of 4, he spent his early years trying to keep up with siblings Mitch, Susie and Patti.
In 1976 their Mom was killed in a motor vehicle collision that also severely injured Steve. Despite everyone’s worries about Steve’s future, he grew into a strong, articulate and compassionate man.
Steve met Kathy Jewsbury at the Applied Communications Program at Camosun College. They each moved to Medicine Hat to work in television. Their love blossomed.
Although they enjoyed their work, TV didn’t really cover the bills. Grande Prairie provided job opportunities- being closer to Steve’s Dad and Stepmom Jane was the icing on the cake.
Steve and Kathy wed in July 2007 on the beach in Kelowna. They welcomed their son Liam in 2009 and their daughter Mable in 2015. Steve was so happy to have a family. He worked to make their lives the best they could be. His goal was to move Kathy & their kids to Victoria to be closer to her parents, Rob & Evelyn, sister, Andrea, brother-in-law and cousins.
Steve and Kathy relocated to Victoria in July 2021, purchasing her grandmother’s house in Oak Bay. While Steve commuted for work in Grande Prairie for another 1 1⁄2 years, his focus remained on the family. “Thank heavens for FaceTime,” he’d say.
Last summer, Steve accepted a position with Michell Excavating in Victoria and then shifted to Oak Bay Public Works. He had regular day shifts, Monday to Friday, for the first time in his adult life. He could be at the house just after the kids got home from school!
They were able to do so many things together as a family. Their lives were so happy, and we were all so happy for them.
Steve is survived by his wife Kathy, son Liam and daughter Mable, Stepmom Jane Manning, siblings Mitch (Nicole Steward), Susie (Craig Miller), Patti (Mario Dipanfilo), in-laws Robert and Evelyn Jewsbury, Andrea (Mike Gandy) and nieces and nephews: Roxanne, Tarah, Noelle & Grayden Seekins, Matteo & Dontae Dipanfilo, Rylee & Linden Gandy.
We know Steve is also remembered by his extended family, many friends and coworkers.
A Celebration of Life for Steve will be held at 4 PM Tuesday, May 30, at the Dave Dunnet Theatre, Oak Bay High School.
