Obituary
With great sadness, the family of the late Steve Kurytnik, beloved husband of the late Sonia Kurytnik, announce his passing at the Norquay Health Centre, Norquay, SK, on October 8, 2024, at the age of 90 years.
Steve was born on July 4, 1934, in the Poelcapelle District of Swan Plain, SK, to Leon and Mary (Nahachewsky) Kurytnik. He was the 5th of 12 children. He attended school in Arabella and was very good in school but left in Grade 8 to help with the family farm.
Steve met Sonia Ochitwa (the eldest daughter of Anne and Nicoli Ochitwa) when she
was working as a waitress at his sister Blondie’s restaurant. They were married on November 17, 1956. They had 3 children, Sandra (Eugene Andrusiak), Debra (Ron Kluk) and Bradley.
Steve was never afraid of hard work and had a hand in many occupations. He worked up north logging, in Leaf Rapids on construction and hauling gravel. He was a vet assistant in Preeceville with Dr. Hushamota. He worked at the Norquay Creamery driving the truck to pick up cream from the local farmers. Although his family lived in Norquay, he did have farmland by his brother Mike’s that they farmed together. He was on the Norquay town council, a member of the volunteer fire department and a member of the Kinsmen Club. He was a town cop along with Al Palmeruk.
Steve and Sonia worked at Cherewyk’s Red & White grocery store and were custodians at the Norquay High School. He worked for the town of Norquay as head maintenance man with Lawrence Gazdewich and Bonnie Guliak until he retired.
Steve loved camping, fishing, hunting, and gardening.
He became a resident of the Norquay Health Centre in 2022.
Steve was predeceased by his parents, Leon and Mary; his wife of 56 years, Sonia; brothers, Mike and Victor; sister, Albina (Blondie) Panagabko; son-in-law, Ron Kluk; and great-grandson, Gage Bogart.
Steve is survived by his 3 children; 7 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren; his brothers, Darold (Kathy) and Louis (Cathy); and his sisters, Theresa Wasylynuk, Darcia Polowich, Emily Embree, Mary (Peter) Shuparski, Phyllis (Donnie) Hubic and Geraldine (Gordon) Sklar; as well as his extended family and many family friends.
A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 16, 2024, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK, with Laura Dahl officiating. Interment will follow in the Canora Cemetery, Canora, SK.
