Obituary
Stanley Raymond Scott- son of Thomas and Ella Scott (Lamrock)
March 28, 1932 – June 8, 2024
In loving memory of Stanley Raymond Scott: a true woodsman whose knowledge, skills, generosity and kindness touched the hearts of many.
A very thick book would burst at the seams with recollections of Stanley’s many stories of accomplishments, experiences, and adventures throughout his rich and full life.
He is best known for his tireless work ethic, where at his family lumber mill he would greet everyone with a smile and friendly conversation- always aiming to please the customer. In the evenings, after an 8-hour day at the mill, he would often be seen in the company’s red “slab truck”, delivering lumber or slab wood with his faithful canine companion happily perched in the passenger seat.
At the young age of 12, Stanley began his work and adventures in the woods beside his father Tom, and brother Everett. The trio spent countless hours navigating rivers and lakes, blazing pathways and roads through the woods, felling trees and skilfully guiding booms of logs downstream to the family sawmill.
Stanley was a willing helper of his father who made a side business as a woods guide for many from the USA who sought the thrill of a hunt up river to Musquash Lodge.
When Tom was no longer able, Stanley took over the family sawmill along with his brother Phil, and sons Raymond and Rene. Under his guidance and teachings, the business has now become a valuable asset to the local community- providing specialized materials for construction of many boats which steam out of the wharves in our area, as well as providing building materials. Quality and affordability remains the company’s aim. Until recently, Stanley’s role at Scott’s Mill included, among many other tasks, operating the huge log loader which fed the logs from the yard into the mill (sometimes at the expense of a few innocent vehicles!)
Although most of Stanley’s working life was spent working in the woods and in the mill, his true passion was driving trucks. For a number of years, he managed and operated Scott’s Trucking. He loved hitting the road on a long trip to Halifax for a load of beer from Olands or Moosehead Breweries or to Pugwash for a load of salt. He hauled many pieces of furniture out of Ven Rez in Shelburne to be distributed to a number of schools, universities and offices throughout the province.
Another high point of Stanley’s life was when experienced lumberjacks from a great pool of family and friends staged a “Last Log Drive” on the Barrington River as part of the 100 year Loyalist Landing Celebration. He was named “River Boss” and directed his crew through the chilly, dangerously rushing waters and snowy, wet days of April and May in 1983 to successfully bring the logs from Glasgow (Near Great Pubnico Lake) to the Barrington River mill pond beside his childhood home in Riverhead. This entire venture was filmed by the National Film Board and can be accessed through their website.
Up until recent years, he was an enthusiastic and entertaining participant in the family- owned “World Famous Scott’s Timber Show.” He was always excited to take part in “competing” on the green team or the red team; he and his “logrolling dog” stealing the show on many occasions.
Stanley was extremely proud of his family’s heritage and traditions. He took pleasure passing on his wisdom to many fortunate enough to learn from him. This would include anyone willing to to ask questions and sit a spell while he either spun a yarn or actively taught one of the vast repertoire of skills he possessed. Stanley once spent an afternoon at Forest Ridge Academy and entranced an entire class of Grade 5 students- many of whom decided by the end of the day, wanted to work in a mill and be like Stanley.
He was an active member of the Nova Scotia Guides Association and earned a lifetime membership because of his contributions and commitment to the development of guiding skills and guiding sports and competitions.
As a young man, Stanley was an accomplished competitor and participant in the Beaverdam Sports Meet for many years with his brother Everett. Wherever there was a Guide Sports Meet, Stanley would be there- handedly beating the competition. Up until the age of 80, he was an active competitor with his nephew Darren Hudson at the annual Hibernia Sports Meet in Queens County.
Stanley will be deeply missed by his wife of 71 years, Betty (Newell), his sons Scotty (Tonya), Rene (Georgina), Raymond (Jayne), daughter April (Gerry), 10 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 2 brothers, 5 sisters, numerous extended family members, and many friends. He is predeceased by brothers Everett and Rene, sister Lillian, and granddaughter Melissa.
To all those who crossed his path, Stanley instilled the values of hard work, the importance of carrying on skills and traditions, and the necessity of love, respect and appreciation of the outdoors and all living things.
Small in stature and substantial in character, Stanley cast a long shadow. He no longer walks among us but his spirit will live on in the flowing, rushing river, the mighty towering trees, and in the unforgettable stories and endearing memories he has left behind.
Stanley’s wishes were to be cremated. He worked through biting frigid winters for 80 years, so figured he may as well leave this Earth with warm hands and feet.
Stanley was a modest man and at his request, preferred no funeral ceremony.
Instead, his family cordially invites all family and friends to the Barrington Lions Hall on June 23, 2024 from 2:00 until 4:00 to express condolences to Stanley’s cherished family, share some stories, enjoy a few refreshments, or just be in the company of countless people who loved him tremendously.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Barrington. In lieu of flowers, since Stanley was never really a flowers kind of guy, you are all invited to make a donation in his memory to either the Nova Scotia Guides Association or to the Yarmouth SPCA. Both organizations were dear to him.
