Spencer Tracy Nichols Obituary
Dr. Spencer Tracy Nichols, known affectionately as Spence, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2024, at the age of 86. Born on November 29, 1937, in Medicine Hat, Spence was a man of remarkable intellect and kindness, whose presence was a blessing to all who knew him. He departed from this world in Strathmore, after a valiant battle with illness.
Spence’s life was extraordinary and full of love for his family, academic achievement, and a passion for the great outdoors. Spencer is survived by his loving wife, Sandra Nichols, with whom he shared a long and loving marriage; his four children: Stacy, Stewart and his wife Anita Nichols, Scott, Hayes and his wife, Keri de Mille and 5 grandchildren.
A man of profound knowledge and wisdom, Spence dedicated his life to education, obtaining his Ph.D. and serving as a Professor Emeritus at the University of Calgary. His contributions to academia were significant, and his influence on students spanned generations. His work extended beyond the classroom, as he was actively involved in various associations, where his insights and leadership were highly valued.
Spence’s passion for the outdoors was as boundless as the skies over Alberta. He was a continual source of wonder, excitement, and adventure with many family trips hunting, fishing, and camping in the wilderness. A detailed craftsman, Spence spent much time in his workshop using his skilled hands to produce complex and challenging woodworking projects. His mind was always active, often solving puzzles or besting his opponents in a game of chess or cards. These interests were not merely hobbies but extensions of his character, embodying his love for life’s simple pleasures and the challenges they presented.
Dr. Spencer Tracy Nichols led a full life rich in experiences and relationships. He was a beacon of inspiration, a devoted family man, a respected educator, and a true friend to many. His departure leaves behind a void that cannot be filled, but his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him. Spence’s legacy is one of love, knowledge, and the joy of life’s adventures, and it will be cherished forever.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 30, 2024, at Wheatland Funeral Home (Strathmore) at 11:00 am.

Dear Sandra and Family:
Our deepest sympathies on Spencer’s passing. He was a special person in many ways.
I was a colleague of Spencer’s in Electrical Engineering for several decades, and my wife and I have very fond memories of him as a gentle, positive, helpful person with a great sense of humor. It was always a pleasure interacting with him, and the undergraduate and graduate students loved him. He was very competent technically, and was always willing to help people when technical issues arose in areas that needed his expertise. He was the «go to» on signal processing issues in particular.
In the early years, students, technical and support staff, academics and administrators would gather in our coffee lounge regularly, having conversations about our work and other things. Spencer was truly an avid outdoorsman, and we had great discussions about his exploits while hunting, fishing and camping, where some of the hunting escapades he described were quite hilarious. We also talked about his exceptional woodworking skills!
Those days were a special time period in our university lives, forever fondly remembered.
Spencer, may you rest in peace, after a life well-lived!
Sincerely,
Jim and Kay Haslett
