It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Brent (née Cox) on Thursday October 26th, peacefully, with her two daughters by her side. She was 90 years old. Although she had struggled with her health for several decades, she never lost her love of life. She was a model of perseverance, patience and fortitude. She is predeceased by her husband Rex (1993), her daughter April (2018), and all of her and Rex’s siblings. Beloved Mom to Sue (John Bricker), Jeff (Penny), and Nancy (Mark Slade). Adoring grandma to five wonderful grandchildren, including her eldest grandson Jason Brubacher (Stephanie), whom she looked after in her early retirement and with whom she had a special bond. She also leaves behind eight precious great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Shirley was born in Hespeler, Ontario to Martha and James Cox, the youngest of their eleven children. With the exception of the last year, she lived in Hespeler all of her life. She had a great deal of love and admiration for the little town she grew up in, which she captured in her numerous paintings. She seemed to be a conduit for creativity, playing the piano from the age of 5, but also singing, baking, cooking, sewing, painting, drawing – she was interested and proficient in just about everything. Shirl worked from a very young age in the woollen mills, and many factories in Hespeler until she retired in her forties. All the while she was working she was raising her family, and making a home that would rival anything in Martha Stewart Living. She said she still felt like she had much to do, and loved life even when it was difficult. Services will be held at St. Andrew’s Hespeler Presbyterian Church on Friday November 10th. Visitation from 12-2, with the funeral following. Arrangements made through Lounsbury Funeral Home. In Lieu of flowers, donations to St. Andrew’s Hespeler Presbyterian Church, Kidsability or the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
