It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Shirley Martel on Monday, December 11, 2023, at the Golden Manor after many long years and heartbreaking challenges with Alzheimer’s.
Shirley will be greatly missed by her incredible loving husband Claude Martel. Her cherished children Wendy Knutson (Doug), Cindy Weir McCaughley, and Troy Richards (Kelly). Her dear grandchildren Kailey Knutson (David Frid), Raylene Knutson (Micheal DiLeo), Trent Knutson (Kaitlin Slack), Angela Cameron (David), John Weir, A.J. Weir (Alec Bizby), Samantha Richards (Micheal Watson) and Matthew Richards as well as 5 great grandchildren. Also left to mourn is her sister Donna Lee Conley and sister in-law Sharron Lee McChesney.
Shirley also leaves behind an incredible extended family on the Martel side. Stepdaughters Theresa Lessard (Paul), Denise St Cartier (Marc), Helen Pare (Jess), Sue Belair (Claude) and Claudette Brisson (Dan). Step-grandchildren Rachel Head (Dale), Ronald Lessard (Tammy), Ashley St Cartier, Jean Rock Brisson (Breanna), Jenny Pare, Caroline Millette (Myles), Mathew Belair (Britney), Brandon Belair, Andre Gagnon and Bianca Gagnon, as well as 13 step-great-grandchildren. Claude’s daughters and their families had welcomed her with open arms for nearly 30 years.
She was predeceased by her dad Donald McChesney and her mother Norma Wickstead (Alfred), her brothers Buddy McChesney and Jack McChesney, her sister in-law Peggy McChesney and brother in-law Wayne Conley.
Born in Timmins, Shirley made the most of her life while raising her kids and taking pride in her home. Shirley met Claude, the love of her life who she shared many incredible dreams and memories with. Over the years, Shirley enjoyed working as a hairdresser, in real estate, as an addiction counsellor and in office management. After retirement she and Claude traveled to Europe, Western Canada, the US, and built a home together on Barbers Bay. Shirley always needed to be busy. Either enjoying her time in the garden or working around the yard. She loved playing cards with friends and family and on more than one occasion, she was caught cheating… but for her, it was all part of the game. More than anything she loved being surrounded by those she loved.
The family would like to offer thanks and appreciation to all who played a role in her sobriety and supported her during some of her most challenging days. Shirley was proud of her sobriety, and it was a turning point for her that played an indescribable role in her family life. We are all forever grateful. In her most recent years Shirley was cared for at the Golden Manor and the care she received from all of the staff has been incredible. Our thanks to everyone that has helped her during her stay and in her final days.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to LESSARD Funeral and Cremation Centre. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Remembrance donations to the Alzheimer’s Society Timmins would be greatly appreciated.
