It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Shirley Marie Spears, age 83, on Friday, February 17, 2023 at the Northside Community Guest Home with her daughter Joan by her side.
Born in North Sydney on June 2, 1939, she was the daughter of the late John and Lillian (Miles) Collins. She was employed most of her working years as a waitress, both in Sydney and North Sydney. Shirley became friends with many of her customers as she was a kind and caring person with a passion for life and people. She wasn’t much for travelling and was proud to call Cape Breton home. She enjoyed bingo, shopping, and was happiest when surrounded by family and friends. Shirley will be best remembered as the humble, kind, gentle soul that she was.
Along with her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Spears, and was the last surviving member of the Collins family, predeceased by her siblings, Cecil (Margaret) Collins, Gordon Collins, Martha (Matthew) Dolomont, Daisy (Richard) Osborne, Joan (George) Connors, Violet (Richard) Tremblett, and Elsie (Harold) McPhee.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Joan (Jim) MacDonald and grandchildren Ryan (Jenn) MacDonald, Kristin (David) Taylor, and Nicholas MacDonald. Also surviving are her great grand-daughters Alexa MacDonald and Poppy Taylor, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was especially close to her nephew Richard (Trish) Collins.
Special thanks to the staff at the Northside Community Guest Home, particularly in Joseph Hall and MacEachern Hall for the excellent care and compassion she received over her 12 years of living there. A special thanks also to Dr. Patrick O’Grady.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request of the family. A private Interment will take place in the spring at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. If one wishes to make a donation in Shirley’s memory, we suggest the Salvation Army or charity of one’s choice but, most of all, be good to one another and spread kindness.
