It is with heavy hearts that the family of Shirley E. Aucoin, 73 announce her peaceful passing on March 17th, 2024 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Shirley was born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia in 1950 to the late Olga and Joe Wilcox, though lifelong friends would say she «grew up in the horse barns». She started raising horses at a very early age before transitioning to riding and training them. Shirley was known as one of the earliest female drivers within the community, and pursued her passion until she no longer could.
When she wasn’t raising horses or spending time with family, she was working as a school teacher and did so for 35 years. Many of her former students would continue to recognize and catch up with her in town – a lasting testament to the number of lives she touched throughout her career. Long after her retirement from St. Agnes in 2006, Shirley remained a devoted member of the school community by volunteering in various events.
In addition to her continued support for the schools, Shirley was also a fierce «road warrior» who was always willing to help those in need. Whether it was delivering meals to seniors, picking up prescriptions for friends and family, or driving her grandkids to the school bus every morning, Shirley gave much of her well-deserved retirement years to others.
It is difficult to summarize the many elements of Shirley’s life, including her deep love for animals, her morning coffee runs for friends and family, her quality time with her squad of girl friends, and her Bingo nights with her grandchildren. These are just a few ways her loved ones will remember her. Now is her time to rest after giving so much to so many, and we can trust she’s in her happy place: “gone to Judique”, picking blueberries with her father.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Danielle Aucoin; her partner, Ervin McNeil; her sister, Mary Jo Wilcox; her grandchildren, Robyn “Honeybee” Head, Riley “Ri-Guy” Clarke, and Ella Harker; and her great-grandson, Jackson Head. She is predeceased by her husband, Daniel Aucoin; and her niece, Mary Olga Wilcox.
If you so wish donations may be made in Shirley’s memory to your local SPCA or Literacy Canada.
