Shirley Ann St. Onge (nee Francis)
1941-2024
Shirley Ann St. Onge (née Francis) passed away
peacefully at Garden Home on Thursday, October 31, 2024, at the age of
83. True to her own time and way, she came into the world in New
Brunswick while her mother was traveling, and she left just as she
lived—on her own terms.
Born to Bertha (Labobe) and Arthur Francis, Shirley was the
second of eight children. A survivor of residential school, she was a
resilient woman who fiercely loved her family and encouraged everyone
around her to pursue their dreams. Shirley led by example, excelling
in her studies at Notre Dame College, and she took immense pride in
seeing her children and grandchildren continue their education and
build lives of their own.
Her journey took her to New Hampshire, where she met Leo St.
Onge, the love of her life. Together, they set down roots in
Charlottetown. Their door was always open, with family stopping by
unexpectedly and visiting often, filling their home with laughter,
stories, and the love that was always at the heart of
Shirley’s life. She was deeply proud of her children and
grandchildren, who affectionately called her «Meme,» and the
family they grew into.
In a special moment after her passing, Shirley’s
sister, Clan Mother Doreen Jenkins, honored her by giving Shirley her
own cherished ribbon skirt. Doreen lovingly offered her skirt to
Shirley so she could begin her journey, wrapped in its honor
and meaning. This was Shirley’s first ribbon skirt, a
beautiful tribute that honored Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women
and Girls (MMIWG) and Indian Residential School Survivors. The family
extends a heartfelt thank you to Doreen for this meaningful
gift.
Shirley will be lovingly remembered by her children, Corinne
(Merle) Chappell, Diane (Pat) Burke, Michael St. Onge (late Arlene
Irving), Lori St. Onge (Michael Wynne), and Lisa (George) Cooper,
along with her cherished grandchildren: Meghan and Kala Chappell,
Jenna and Aaron Burke, Amanda Leblanc, Christopher St. Onge, and
Richard and Bradley Cooper, as well as her
great-grandchildren.
The family extends special thanks to the staff at Garden Home
for their compassion and care. In honoring her wishes, there will be
no visiting hours or formal service.
Shirley lived a life of courage, love, and loyalty, forever
proud of her family. Her legacy lives on in the lives she shaped, the
strength she showed, and the love she gave.
