Shirley Ann Edwards (née McCullough, 1932-2024) passed away peacefully in Bobcaygeon, Ontario on Thursday, August 29th, 2024 at the age of 91. Shirley was loved by many who will miss her wonderful company and engaged curiosity, wit, and intellect. Shirley is predeceased by her husband, Gerald (Gerry) Bryant Edwards (1932-2024) and daughter, Sharil Ann Edwards (1966-2018). She leaves behind her daughter Mary Margaret Wilson (née Edwards, b. 1967), son-in-law David Reginald Wilson (b. 1965), grandson Alec Ross Wilson (b. 1992), and granddaughter, Sarah Joan Wilson (b. 1996).
Shirley was born in Meaford, Ontario to Wilbur Lorne McCullough (1903–1984) and Lila Mary Isabel McCullough (née McCutcheon, 1910–2001). Shirley felt so fortunate to have a beloved younger sister, Mary Lingley (nee McCullough b. 1937). Mary, and her husband, David, were very dear to her, as were the couple’s children, Lori and Michael. The extended McCullough and Lingley families gathered in each other’s cottages every summer on Canal Lake and nearby Butternut Creek in Ontario for fun in the water and on the dock, making many happy memories for members of several generations of the families. Shirley also loved her husband Gerry’s parents, brothers, sister, and many nieces and nephews and looked forward to holidays and travel with them, as well as trips to the family farm in Algonquin, Ontario.
Shirley was a proud graduate of the Domestic Science program at the former Ryerson Polytechnic in Toronto, Ontario, and went on to earn a teaching certificate. She loved being a teacher and remembered her students and colleagues fondly. She was teaching Home Economics in Niagara Falls, Ontario, when she met both her husband, Gerry, and her lifelong friends, Lee and Robert (Bob) Jamieson. Lee Jamieson was Shirley’s closest friend, and until Lee passed away in 2012, the two of them had an ease and joy in each other’s company that was precious to Shirley. Bob, Lee, Gerry, and Shirley were as close as friends can be and their children remain connected.
Gerry and Shirley faced difficulties expanding their family, but when they finally welcomed two daughters only a year apart from one another, Shirley set aside teaching full-time to raise Sharil and Mary. Shirley was an extraordinary mother and her daughters had the immense benefit of her love and attention, as well as her culinary, sewing, and academic skills. They also each had the thrill of having their very own mother as a substitute teacher in their classes over the years.
As her health declined, Shirley was grateful for the care and companionship provided by Christie Hall, Brittany Kuipers, Jessica Kuipers, Jane Dlouhy, and other caregivers.
