Sharon Yanke Obituary
It is with the heaviest of hearts that the family of Sharon Yanke announce her unexpected passing Wednesday, May 29th at Pasqua Hospital at the age of 71 years.
Sharon was born July 20, 1952 to Vincent and Doreen Chilcott. Sharon grew up in Rocanville SK with two sisters, Shirlene and Dawna, and a brother Grant. After her father’s passing, Sharon gained step-father Harlow Gough, and visits to her mom and Harlow at the ranch in the valley remained dear to her heart for many years.
Sharon met Arden Yanke in 1973 when by chance they sat in back to back booths in a Yorkton restaurant and struck up a conversation. Married in 1974, the couple settled into farm life outside of Ebenezer SK. Three children, Quentin, Marcilyn and Devin, completed the family in the coming years.
Sharon was a farm wife for many years, raising the children while being Arden’s right hand. Memories of those years are among the fondest held by her children; fresh bread and cinnamon buns when we got off the bus, packed picnics in the field with dad, new skates for Christmas each year to use on the frozen dugout. The garden seemed to get bigger and bigger each year. Mom made sure we all knew how to hill potatoes and shell peas, but chores didn’t feel like chores at all; days spent in the waning summer heat filling trailers up with garden bounty to be washed and stored usually ended in a water fight and an ice cream cone.
Sharon & Arden moved to Yorkton in 2001 and a new chapter began. Mom worked outside the home for the first time in many years, at Zellers, and then at Superstore. She liked to be busy, and enjoyed her time out of the house and her independence.
Sharon was an amazing grandmother. Living far away, Tylan and Deegan looked forward to weeks spent at “G’ma Sharon’s” in summers and around holidays. There were walks to the mall, lunches at Manos, fairs and ribfests and always an ice cream at Scoops. As the boys grew, there were deep conversations over coffee about current events and politics and philosophy. Grandma Sharon was an amazing conversationalist, and a strong supportive influence as the boys grew into fine young men. She couldn’t contain her pride as she watched them graduate and begin their careers. Grandma Sharon was lucky to have Tayah & Hayes close by as they grew, and she went to as many birthday parties, concerts and taekwondo events as she could, always cheering them on with pride. Whether planned or spontaneous, Sunday drives often ended on their doorstep to catch up over coffee or a meal.
Through the years, you rarely saw Sharon without Arden. They did everything together, complimenting each other in every way. They worked well together on renovation projects, and loved helping Devin & Quentin on their homes and yards. Sharon was fond of road trips with Arden across the province to visit her sisters, her daughter or family in the valley, or down through the States to sightsee and shop. Sharon & Arden were incredibly active, and had begun walking in recent years, proud to mark 2km on the trails behind their home. They enjoyed time spent at the lake with Marci’s family, quading with the boys, and gardening in the country with Devin. Sharon & Arden celebrated 50 years of marriage in January, and he already misses her dearly.
Sharon was predeceased by her father, Vincent Chilcott, brother Grant Chilcott, mother Doreen Gough, step-father Harlow Gough, brother-in-law Grant Miller, brother-in-law Terry Donaldson, father-in-law Elmer Yanke, mother-in-law Rosene Yanke, sister-in-law Marilyn Yanke, and brother-in-law Vance Bohn. Sharon leaves to mourn her passing her husband of 50 years Arden Yanke, son Quentin & Dana, Tayah and Hayes, daughter Marci & Cory Siwicki, Tylan Siwicki & Jen Fusick and Deegan Siwicki, son Devin Yanke, sister Shirlene Donaldson & Wilf Boucher, sister Dawna & Leo Plamondon, brother-in-law Robert Bergen, sister-in-law Ardice Yanke, sister-in-law Janice & Brent Kirk and numerous nieces and nephews.
A come & go Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday June 5, please contact the family for details. In lieu of floral arrangements, the family asks that you please plant a perennial or flowering shrub in Sharon’s memory that may be enjoyed for years to come.
“A wife, a mother, a grandma, too,
This is the legacy we have from you.
You taught us love, and how to fight,
You gave us strength, you gave us might.
A stronger person would be hard to find,
And in your heart, you were always kind.
You fought for us all in one way or another,
Not just as a wife, not just as a mother.
For all of us, you gave your best,
Now the time has come for you to rest.
So go in peace, you’ve earned your sleep,
Your love in our hearts we’ll eternally keep.”
