It is with deep sadness and heavy
hearts, that the family of Ruth Jean
Jewkes, of Fredericton NB, formally of Morris St.
Springhill, NS. announce her passing at the Dr. Everett Chalmers
Hospital in Fredericton NB, on September 16, 2024.
Ruth was born in Springhill, NS on
August 31st 1929, and had celebrated her 95th birthday shortly before
her passing. She was the daughter of the late John and Janet (Gordon)
Calder.
Following Ruth’s education in
the Springhill school system, she worked for 15 years at the
Springhill Post Office. During the mine disaster, she worked with St
John Ambulance. As a young adult, she enjoyed going to
Johnny Mooring dances, polkaing with her brother Hughie, line dancing
with her best friend Sheila Burns, doing the jive and the twist with
daughters Doris and Janet. Mom/Gram loved all types of
music, from jigs and reels, to country music. She was a fan of Guns
and Roses, Twisted Sister, Meatloaf, and ABBA to name a few. She
always looked forward to hearing her nephew Peter Calder singing
Fraulein and The Rose. However her heart was always beating
stronger when the bagpipes were playing. Her love of
Scotland radiated throughout her home on Morris St. where you would
find the Gordon Tartan, Robert Burns poems on her fridge and enjoy a
good cup of tea , or a drink of scotch if you were so inclined and it
was after 5. Her pride for Scotland only grew stronger when
she travelled to her homeland with daughter Doris and son-in-law James
and reclaimed the Calder Castle for her own.
Mom loved to travel and made many trips
to Burlington and to Grand Falls to spend holidays with her
grandchildren. She travelled throughout France, Florida and
Ontario. Mom loved musicals and often reminisced about going
to Toronto to see Phantom of the Opera, Mama Mia, South Pacific and
Sound of Music to name a few. In later years, she enjoyed
the Fredericton Playhouse, but her favorite was always the time she
went to Stratford to see the musical Oliver, with the «two
Doris’s».
Mom loved to cook and bake in her
beloved pantry. Her grandchildren looked forward to her caramel
brownies and she was famous for her molasses candy at
Halloween.
She is survived by her daughters Doris
(James) Patriquin of Burlington, ON, Janet (Keith) Watson of
Fredericton, NB, son John (Bonnie, Jesse and Bobby MacDermaid) Jewkes
of Fredericton, NB. As well, grandsons Kiefer Watson and
Josh Patriquin, granddaughter Halle Watson and several nieces and
nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband
Harold James (Hallie) Jewkes in 2005, brothers George, James, John,
Robert, Hugh, as well as sister Doris (Steingart).
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted
to A. H. Brown Funeral Home, 5 McFarlane
Street, Springhill, (902 597 2361) where visitation will be held on
Friday, September 20, 2024 from 6-8 pm and on Saturday from 1 pm until
the time of the funeral service at 2 pm. Burial in Hillside
Cemetery, Springhill.
If so desired, donations in Ruth’s
memory may be made to the GOVRC Workshop or Springhill Baptist Church
would be appreciated.
