RUTH LOUKIDELIS
Ruth Helen Mott was born October 9, 1932, in Toronto, and peacefully passed away August 31, 2024, in Toronto, with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her husband, the Hon. Spyros Loukidelis, in 2001 and by her parents Harold Edgar Mott and Marion Frances Mott (Caswell), and siblings, Mary, John, Anne and Margaret.
Ruth is survived by her children David (Jill Clayton), John (Sarah Wayland), and Daphne (Tom Baker), and their children, Max Loukidelis, David Loukidelis, Miriam Loukidelis Vanderkruk, Sophia Silverton and Callia Silverton. She is survived by her brother-in-law, the Hon. Ernest Loukidelis, and many nieces and nephews.
Ruth grew up in Brantford, Ontario, and graduated from the University of Toronto (St. Hilda’s), with an honours degree in history, having also studied at Smith College. She met our father at university and, after their marriage in 1955, they moved to North Bay and then Sudbury in 1974, after our father’s judicial appointment. Our parents had a close, loving marriage, in which good humour and a sense of fun abounded.
Ruth was a lifelong learner, a keen reader of history, and always interested in politics and public policy. She put her continuing education in sociology to good use in helping lead the creation of Sudbury’s first shelter for survivors of domestic violence, the YWCA’s Genevra House. Ruth served on the Board of Governors of Sudbury’s Thorneloe University and was an Honorary Fellow of the University. She was a member of the Council of General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada, and for many years was a parishioner and Vestry Board member at the Church of the Epiphany in Sudbury. Ruth was also a long-time member of the Canadian Federation of University Women, and a member of many book clubs and bridge clubs over the years. Among her great pleasures were performances of the Sudbury Theatre Centre, Sudbury Symphony, and the Canadian Opera Company.
Our mother was intelligent, warm, good-humored and kind, and we will be eternally grateful for her love and care. We will never forget her or her gifts.
We are deeply grateful for the care and love Ruth received from the team at New Horizons in Toronto, especially on the Oasis, their dementia care floor, and from her wonderful caregivers, Maricar and Josie.
A funeral service will be held on September 5, at 11:00 a.m., at the Church of the Epiphany, 85 Larch Street, Sudbury. A visitation is being held on September 4, from 6:00-8:00 p.m., at Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home, 233 Larch Street, Sudbury, Ontario.
Flowers gratefully declined in favour of donations to the YWCA’s Genevra House or the Church of the Epiphany. (Arrangements entrusted to the Jackson & Barnard Funeral Home).
