Ruth Fuson – age 92 of Knoxville went to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 5, 2023. Member of First Baptist Church of Knoxville. Ruth was born on July 25, 1930 in Cullowhee, NC. Her grandfather was the founder of Western Carolina University and continued to sit on the Board of Directors until his death.
Ruth had always wanted to be a missionary. When she was 16 years old, God’s plan for her life led her to Southern Baptist Theological Seminary of Church Music in Louisville, KY where at 20 years of age she was a graduate of the very first Sacred Music class at the seminary, graduating with a Bachelor of Sacred Music. Two years later, she received her Master of Religious Education at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, TX. While pursuing her Master’s degree there, she met her future husband, Dr. Jack Fuson, who had just finished his education there to become a dentist. They were married at the Sagamore Hills Baptist Church in Ft. Worth, TX.
Shortly after their marriage, Jack was off to Goose Bay Labrador Air Force Base in Canada to serve his military duty, and Ruth moved to Fairfax County, VA where she taught first grade. Jack arranged for Ruth to visit Goose Bay Labrador to be with him for 30 days. They would stay in the honeymoon cottage on base that Jack had reserved for them. Legally, Ruth could only stay the 30 days there as a civilian, but while visiting there, a fourth-grade teaching position became available so Ruth was able to stay in Goose Bay with Jack. While in Goose Bay, Ruth also directed the Chapel Choir on base and served as a Chaplain’s Assistant.
When their military service was over, their journey took them to various cities exploring where there was a need for dentists. They moved to Sevierville, TN where Ruth became the very first full-time choir director for the First Baptist Church of Sevierville.
Jack later went back to school to complete his education to become an oral surgeon. While Jack went back to school, Ruth worked teaching Choral Music and English at South High School. After his schooling, they moved to Knoxville, TN where Jack completed his residency as an oral surgeon. By this time, they had two children.
During her times at various churches, Ruth began to help serve in the Grief Support Ministry. She decided that she wanted more training in this area and thus completed her CPE Training at East Tennessee Baptist Hospital to become a Chaplin. This led Ruth into the Grief Support Counseling field which she loved. She began the Hospice program at Ft. Sanders Regional Hospital and served there as Bereavement Coordinator for 10 years. She continued her grief counseling education by studying under Allen Wolfelt. Having a desire to minister to children that were grieving, Ruth developed “Katerpillars Kids Camp” which provided grief support for children. Ruth often shared that the “most gratifying work she ever was privileged to be a part of” was Hospice and the Katerpillars Kids Camp. Ruth later went on to found “The Gates to Hope”, a grief counseling program for adults. In 2005, Ruth continued her career as Grief Counselor for Bridges Funeral Home.
Preceded in death by parents, John and Emma Hooper; husband of 53 years, Dr. Jack Fuson; son, Kent Fuson; brothers, Eugene Hooper, and James Hooper; sisters, Hazel Lewis, Juanita Levi, and Sally Bose.
Survived by daughter, Dawn Fuson; sons, Keith (Teresa) Fuson, and Brock Fuson; grandchildren, Natalie Fuson, Lindsey Fuson, and Haley (Will) Calkins; and several nieces and nephews.
