Ruth Jackson Obituary
Ruth passed away very suddenly at the age of 84. Ruth leaves behind her three children: Pam (Bill), Heather (Doug), and Paul as well as 3 grandchildren: Amy, Abby, and Brooke. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, David, in 2019. She was also predeceased by her older brothers, Fred and Alan, as well as her parents, Reginald and Gertrude Stones. Ruth has nieces and nephews in Calgary, BC, Thunder Bay, and England who she was very fond of, and they will miss her very much.
Ruth was born in Thunder Bay (formerly Port Arthur) on March 11, 1940. She was considerably younger than her two older brothers and became a doting aunt at a young age. She made the decision to attend St. John’s College (U of Manitoba) in Winnipeg to pursue her BA in Psychology with a minor in French. Sadly, on a 1960 trip to Winnipeg from Thunder Bay to pick her up from school, her Dad was killed in a car accident and her Mom was severely injured.
During her last year at University, Ruth met a very shy young man, David Jackson, who had recently emigrated from England and had decided later in life to go back to university to become a Minister for the Anglican Church. Shy as he was, David pursued the woman he fell in love with and they were engaged in 1961 and married on May 18, 1963.
After graduation, Ruth worked as a Probation Officer and Social Worker for Family and Children’s Services in Winnipeg and Thunder Bay. It was not long before she realized her own divergence of values with the court system, and decided to leave the field for good.
While David had one more year to complete his Masters, Ruth was happy to leave work and became a stay-at-home mom in 1964 when Pam was born in Winnipeg. Once David graduated in 1965, the life of a full-time Minister became a reality and the family moved several times to new parishes. Moves were very hard on Ruth but two in particular brought new joys to offset the realities of leaving behind dear friends: Heather was born in 1966 in Treherne, Man and Paul was born in 1970 in Manitou, MB. The family moved to Florenceville, NB in 1973. This was a particularly hard move as there was now great distance between our family in Thunder Bay and friends in Manitoba.
With the next move to Westfield, NB, Ruth decided to return to work to develop community in her new home. Being out of work fifteen years, she struggled at first to know where she belonged. Thankfully, she ended up working for Saint John Libraries, starting as a part-time casual and ending her career as Branch Manager at the Westside Branch. There she found the community she’d longed for. She loved her job, was fondly remembered by patrons, and still met regularly with her co-workers for lunch dates despite being retired almost 30 years. Her time at the library also awoke interests (and talent) in calligraphy and bookbinding. She eventually opened a side business in the latter with her partner and dear friend Sheila.
David’s last parish was St. Mary’s where David and Ruth decided to remain as active members of the parish. Ruth and David were so proud to buy their first house (not a parish Rectory) in Greenwich Hill where they spent hours landscaping and renovating the house. When they got snowed in, they would leave their car at the top of the hill and toboggan down the steep hill with groceries in hand. Recognizing that the rural life was becoming a bit too much in later years, their final move as a couple was to Driftwood Lane in Saint John where they found a wonderfully supportive community. The family can’t thank Erin & Corey and other neighbours & friends enough for their support and kindness to Ruth, particularly when David passed away. Ruth made one final move last year to Hillcrest Village. While her stay was brief, she was very happy in her apartment and made many new friends.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John, NB (506-646-2424). Ruth was very particular and organized regarding her final arrangements and we are honouring her wishes for no visitation, eulogies or reception after the funeral. Please join us for her funeral at St. Mary’s Church on Westmorland Road, Saint John on Tuesday, Sept 3rd at 1:00 followed immediately by her burial at Cedarhill Extension Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations towards The Izaac Walton Killam (IWK) Hospital or St. Mary’s Church in Saint John.
