Russell Patrick MacLean, 91

It is with heavy hearts and cherished memories that we announce the passing of our treasured husband, father, poppy, brother, uncle and friend Russell MacLean, on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at the age of 91. Russell passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Northside General Hospital.
Born in North Sydney on June 22, 1931, he was the son of the late Norman and Mary (Young) MacLean. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. Russell started working at the young age of 15, delivering coal alongside his older brother. He worked for Marine Atlantic for a number of years before eventually joining the laborer’s union, working on construction projects around the Cape Breton Municipality. Upon retirement, he enjoyed sitting on the bench in the North Sydney Mall, chatting with “the crew”, slooowly cruzing around the neighborhoods, checking on all his children’s houses. Dad enjoyed Sunday drives with his “Agg”, going to church, out to restaurants and shopping for the deals. Most recently his favorites would be a McDonald’s Happy Meal and would never refuse a piece of warm apple pie.
Russell is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Agnes (Jessome) MacLean, his children, the apples of his eye, Joe (Terry), Ann Long, Mary (Wayne) Beddow, Jude (Penney), Patrice (Lorne) Cantwell, Nancy (David) Cholock, Tracey, Sean (Melissa) and daughter-in-law Judy. His grandchildren Angie (Trent), Sherry (Derek), Michelle (Leo), Joey (Crystal), Laura (Tom), Danny, Shamus (Shauna-Lee), Eric (Tricia), Jillian (Shane), Kylie (Kyle), Alley (Trevor), Chad (Brianne), Jennine (Roger), Ryan (Jessica), Hannah (Jeremy), and his 23 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers and sisters; Hector, Theresa (Roddie) Bennett, Joey, Norma MacKinnon, Thomas “Buddy” (Mary); in-laws Ernie Fullom, Phyllis (Albert) Wilkie, Margarette Jessome, Maureen (Dave) Bobbitt, Mary Rose (Eddy) Bennett, Beatie Jessome; also, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Along with his parents, Russell was predeceased by his son Russell Jr., special grand-daughter Charmaine Cantwell; great-grandson Landen Seymour; brothers and sisters Cyril (Siddy), George and Josephine Fullom; nephews Trevor MacKinnon and Chris MacLean; son-in-law Stan Long; parents-in-law Gordon and Irene (McGee) Jessome; sisters-in-law Brenda, Kathleen and Patricia.

Visitation will take place from 5 to 8 pm, Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral mass will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney with Rev. Doug MacDonald officiating. Flowers graciously accepted or donations can be made to the St. Vincent de Paul society or the Tom MacNeil Cancer Patient Care Fund.
