Rowena was born and raised in Makinsons to a large family. She married Samuel and together they welcomed three children, Colin, Scott and Leann. Rowena was the heart of the family. More than anything, and always the proud Mother, she enjoyed spending time with her family for dinners, social gatherings and a scattered karaoke concert. Always putting her family first, she expressed a love that knew no bounds. She loved music and especially George Jones. She would jokingly say to her family that she went to bed every night with George Jones, listening to his music on her ipad. Always the Country music enthusiast, she joked about going to Nashville, but enjoyed two milestone birthdays on George Street when she experienced the “down town life”.
Rowena was an avid baker and was well know throughout the Community and abroad for her delicious cakes and cookies! Christmas would not be complete without a dark rum fruit cake (lots of dark rum) and hundreds of assorted cookies. She was always a welcoming host, offering a cup of tea and something sweet before being seated. This paired well with another favorite pastime of Rowena’s, which was to reminisce about old time stories with friends, ending in a good belly laugh.
By nature, Rowena was always a kind hearted and caring person. In her younger years, she was always the dedicated caregiver to those around her, including both her parents and in-laws. Continuing onward with her care-giving spirit, she worked as personal care attendant in care homes and personal care. Throughout this journey, she touched many lives and to this day, people speak fondly of her.
Throughout Rowena’s life she was parent to 52 (fifty-two) foster children, whom she cared for like her own. Later in life she became caregiver to Bill Burke for whom she cared for 28 years and is an important member of the Bussey Family. To this day, many of Rowena’s foster children that were in her care visit her and reminisce fondly about their time spent with her and the family.
A special mention to Darlene Rose and Cindy Bussey for the care and support that they provided to Rowena over the years. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Ramjohn for the excellent medical care provided throughout the years. Special recognition to Sister-in-law and close friend, Mary Fowler, who over the span of 59 years spent many hours with Rowena enjoying a social tea and chat. We would like to mention the lifelong friendship that Rowena had with Gloria, Glenys and Jean Anthony and the love and support that they provided to her throughout her life.
Rowena’s infectious laugh and warm nature will be dearly missed and fondly remembered. At Rowena’s request, there will not be a formal funeral service, but there will be a celebration of life event where we will all reminisce about the good times spent with her and raise a glass in her honor. Details forth coming.
In lieu of flowers, as expressions of sympathy, donations may be made in her loving memory to the Kid’s Eat Smart Program, NL.
