«In Loving Memory of Our Dene Mother, Rosine Marie Janvier
Our mother, Rosine, cherished her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She prayed for their health and well-being every day until her final moments. All she wanted in life was for us; to succeed, to raise her grandchildren well, to make good decisions, and go to church regularly.
Mom was the most consistent and steady presence in our lives. She was always there for us, offering advice on life and the way things are. And of course, she was always right.
Our mom was a friend of Bill W. and celebrated 47 years of continuous sobriety. Father Matthew would be so proud of her, as he was instrumental in introducing her to AA in 1977.
I remember our mom once telling me that she was uneducated and didn’t know much. She was referring to book knowledge and «»paper smarts»» from the white world. I happily reminded her that she was deeply educated in the most important ways.
She was incredibly skilled in the fine arts of crafting with moose hide and beading. With great craftsmanship, she took the raw hides my father harvested, turned them into leather, and sewed beautiful clothing from them. She picked countless berries in season for the long winters and hunted small game, always ensuring our bellies
were full. Mom had a remarkable ability to read the weather. With years of careful observation of the outdoors, she planned our hunting and berry-picking journeys. She was a true survival expert, knowing how to live off the land. In fact, she would outlast any survivor from the show «»Alone»». That’s how incredible she was in her Indigenous ways of knowing and understanding of nature, which she learned from her Dene parents and grandparents.
She didn’t wasted time with indecision. When she heard good advice, she followed it immediately. She was a go-getter. When something needed to be done, she got it done. If she didn’t know how to do something, she would observe closely and figure it out.
Our mom, Rosine is one of the last generations of Dene People who lived off the land with thier vast Indigenous knowledge of survival that allowed the Dene to flurish for thousands of years on Turtle Island.
