It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Rosina Lionello, early on the morning of January 23rd, after a lengthy battle with dementia.
She is predeceased by her husband Bruno (2018), her brothers Antonio, Salvatore, and her sisters, Francescina and Bruna.
She is survived by her sons, Anthony (Vivian), and Mark (Melissa), her grand children Elena, Gabriel, and Ashley (Yvan), her great-grandchildren, Ayden, Thalia, and Aubrey, her sister Natalina (Salvatore), and her brothers Giuseppe (Angelina) and Bruno (Anna Lore), as well as her brother-in-law Peter (Bruna), and her former daughter in-law, Colleen. She is also survived by many nephews and nieces whom she saw and loved as her own.
Rosina was born in Simbario, Calabria, Italy in 1943, and immigrated to Canada when she was 18 years of age. Despite not having much formal education and not knowing the language and culture of the land, she worked hard with the support of her family to create a new life; and that she did. She put everything into what she did – as a hostess at the Dante Club, or as a seamstress at Fair Lady Bridal Salon and Bucovetsky’s, and finally as a greeter at Walmart.
More importantly, it could be seen in the things she loved. She loved deeply, and it showed, to everyone. Her friends, her faith, and her family were her life. Sacred Heart Church, the Catholic Women’s League and the Dante Club held a special place in her heart. But family and friends, that, that was paramount. This was never clearer than when she was doing what she loved, cooking and hosting for her loved ones. You could not leave her house without being overstuffed with food, laughter and warmth; especially her grandchildren.
We want to thank the staff at the Lasalle Residence, and the staff at Extendicare for taking care of ‘Nonna’ in the last years of her life, when she suffered through the most ignominious of days. All of her cherished things, stripped away by the strain of dementia.
She has been and will continue to be sorely missed at basketball games, school functions, on daily walks, in the pews at Mass and at bake sales. Her absence is felt immeasurably. No one could ever say that they forgot ‘Rose’ after they spent time with her.
She is now in the hands of God, reunited with her family who no doubt, welcomed her lovingly, to her well-earned peace.

The family will receive friends on Friday January 26, 2024 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at LESSARD FUNERAL AND CREMATION CENTRE. Funeral service will be held on Saturday January 27, 2024 at 10:30 am at Sacred Heart Church. Entombment will follow at Timmins Memorial Cemetery.
