Ronald Slezack Obituary
Ron was born on June 30, 1946 in Brandon, Manitoba and spent his early years on the family farm. His life was forever changed at age 16 when his mother passed away.
Ron was an avid reader and poured his energy into Education, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (1972) and a Bachelor of Education (1994) from the University of Brandon. A Lifelong learner, he completed a Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Education (1996) at the University of Manitoba.
Committed to education, Ron began his teaching career in Morris where he taught Grade 7 from 1966 -1968. From 1968 – 1970 he taught Grades 3 – 5 in South Indian Lake of the Frontier School Division. In 1972, he accepted a position with Boundary School Division at Shevchenko School where he taught history and physical education until he found his true calling; Special Education. Ron’s passion for the underdog and commitment to those who are often overlooked combined to create a classroom where everyone’s worth was valued and their potential inspired. Ron truly cared about his students. He ended his 33 year teaching career as Vice Principal of Shevchenko School in June 2001.
In retirement, Ron worked at Robidoux Lumber and became lifelong friends with Jo, Marcelle and Margaret. He also worked with Michael Giesbrecht at the Vita Funeral Home ensuring traditions were respected. For fun, Ron acted in movies and enjoyed sharing his brushes with stardom.
Ron was proud of his Ukrainian Heritage, serving as President of his church in 1991. He combined his love of all things Ukrainian and his teaching skills to travel to Lviv, Ukraine to teach Mainstreaming and Implementation at the Dzerelo Rehabilitation Center. Committed to inclusion, Ron returned to Lviv each summer from 1994 to 1996.
In Ukraine, as anywhere Ron lived or travelled, he made friends. What a joy to be Ron’s friend and be invited to one of his delicious meals! The presentation and attention to detail left Martha Stewart wanting. Rony’s of St. Pierre Home Preserves and Baking supplied many friends and family with Paska and Babka at Christmas and Easter. Rony’s Jams, Jellies, and Pickles, along with the pumpkin roll, apple tarts, and specialty cakes are legendary. Ron grew the majority of the ingredients in his well-tended garden. His amazing Ukrainian Wedding Breads were much sought after and admired. His talents were not limited to baking. He designed and created the most beautiful Christmas Wreaths which he gifted to family and friends.
Family included his beloved pets, Charlie, Mooshka and the handsome Bentley. He loved his furry companions and Rony’s developed a special line of treats for them.
Ron possessed an incredible sense of Fun. He enjoyed people, travel, good food, and Kinsmen Bingo which he actually won – once.
Ron was blessed with a true partner, Tony, who shared his love of gardening, preserving, baking, and animals.
Ron – you will be missed!
