Ronald Joseph Southwell Obituary
✨ In Loving Memory of Ronald Joseph Southwell ✨
It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Ronald Joseph Southwell. After a stoic and brave battle with cancer, he was called home into God’s care on November 22, 2024 at the age of 80.
He departed this world peacefully; surrounded by music and prayer and encircled by his loving family.
He was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, caring brother, best uncle, kind father-in-law and brother-in-law, generous friend and helpful neighbor.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Judith (nee Sooley) and their cherished children: Catherine (Maxwell)Hoyles – grandsons Edward and Matthew; Julia (Boyd) Coffin, grandsons Alex, Daniel and Thomas; Ron Jr. and Sarah Southwell; Sister, Bride Lane and Sister- in- law Betty Hogan.
Predeceased by his parents Ronald and Mary Catherine Southwell, sisters: Theresa (Clem) Fewer, Cecilia (William) Holt, brother Edward Hogan, brother -in -law Jim Lane, nephew Ron Fewer and niece Charlotte Sotirakos.
Always proud of his birthplace in Irishtown, Carbonear, Ron was raised in Buchans, where he developed a lifelong love of
hockey. With his sharp mind, he went on to study accounting in St. John’s, where a blind date introduced him to the love of his life, Judith. They would go on to begin their early married life in Ontario, starting a family before returning to their Newfoundland roots.
For 38 wonderful years, Ron and Judith owned and operated Southwell’s Spruce Grove Resort and the Cooper Kettle restaurant, east of Gander. With his love of meeting new people and Judith’s extraordinary home cooking, their establishment became a beloved destination for the local communities and tourists alike. Ron and Judith retired to Mount Pearl and enjoyed a peaceful life of gardening and celebrating gatherings of family and close friends.
He will always be remembered as a “favorite Uncle” by his many nieces and nephews of the Fewer, Holt, Hogan and Lane families.
Ron was a beacon of kindness and generosity, a loving man whose stories from his youth brought joy and laughter to all. His door was always open, welcoming countless friends and extended family alike with warm smiles and a hearty meal.
We’ll carry your love and laughter with us always, Dad. You will be missed more than words can say.
Visitation will be held at Barrett’s Funeral Home 73 Commonwealth Ave., Mount Pearl on Thursday, November 28th and Friday November 29th from 2:00 -4:00pm and 7:00 -9:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2024 at 11:00 am from St. John the Baptist Cathedral Basilica Parish.
For those unable to attend the service will be lived streamed. Please visit www.barretts.ca and follow the link provided.
Ron had a deep love for their many pets over the years. Most recently, he adopted his favorite furry pal from the EVSPCA. As he led a charitable life, we ask that donations in his memory can be made to the Exploits Valley SPCA.
