BELAIRE, Roland –
«Each man’s life touches so many other lives, and when he isn’t around he leaves an awful hole, doesn’t he?” from It’s a Wonderful Life
Roland Belaire passed away in his 92nd year on July 3, 2023, always knowing the love of his family, and giving his best to everything he did. He always proclaimed he had a wonderful life and chose to see the silver lining in all things.
Rolly met the love of his life, Shirley Stickel, at Welland High School where he was a good looking but shy athlete and Shirley was an outgoing scholar. Friends arranged a “blind” date and together they made a wonderful life for their family, marked by love, hard work, good fun and friends.
Rolly was a dedicated, patient father who loved his children’s and grandchildren’s spouses as his own. He delighted in interacting with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, as Rolly remained young at heart and kept a childlike curiosity about the world around him until his last days. Truth be told, the most esteemed in Rolly’s family were the children and the family dogs. Anyone who knew Rolly knew animals and children held a special place in his heart.
Rolly was the dearly loved father of Brett (Linda) and Sherry (Bob Barna). He took great pride in his grandchildren and cherished Jessica Clark (Steve) and their children Brinley and Connor, Melyssa Willard (Trevor) and their daughter Harper, and Bryce Barna and his daughters Emma and Isabelle. He was the beloved brother in law of Don and Marilyn Stickel and uncle to their son Mark.
He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley Stickel Belaire, his parents, Hector and Gladys Belaire, and his sisters, Glenice Garland and Marlene Nikodem.
Hockey was a religion to Rolly. He played in Welland the first year the arena was built and went on to play Juvenile, Jr B, Jr A locally and was invited to the Grand Rapids Rockets training camp in the American Hockey League. When his son Brett became involved in hockey, he coached and served on the Minor Hockey executive. He was a lifelong fan of the Montreal Canadiens and took much delight when the Leafs lost.
Rolly was always a hard worker from his first jobs of paper boy and pin boy in his youth to being one of the first people to work at the Ford Glass Plant, an opportunity he had through his hockey connections. He progressed through roles of increasing responsibility, retiring from Ford after over 30 years of service.
Retirement saw Rolly spending summers at the Barna cottage in New Liskeard or in the Matachewan area with Brett’s family, surrounded by his grandchildren and «granddogs», laughter, fishing in remote lakes, and great stories. Rolly could fix anything, crediting his father for this skill, saying his Dad took the time to show and teach young Rolly when he was fixing things. He was the first person many called when something needed repair. Rolly would gather his tools and after getting the job done, sat down for a well-earned beer.
He loved his wine and his fireplace when watching hockey on TV. He loved his Maclean’s magazine, the wonders of nature, fishing, dogs, and being in the company of his human family and Cook’s Mills friends. He was kind, generous, loyal, independent, strong, stubborn, curious and funny. He used all of these qualities to build a wonderful life for he and his family. He will rise again in their voices when they gather to tell favourite «Rol» stories around the dinner table.
The family is forever grateful to Rolly/Dad/Grandpa for his unconditional and constant love and support and thank Meadows of Dorchester and Season’s Retirement Community for their care in his last years. Cremation has taken place and following Rolly’s wishes there will be no visitation.
