It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Roland Isaac Avery. Roland passed away on September 10 after a courageous battle with cancer. He faced this challenge as he did with every other challenge in life, head on and with no complaints.
He was predeceased by his daughter Leanne and his parents Ernest and Mabel Avery.
Roland is survived by his wife of 62 years, Beverley, his son Brent (Lori); daughter Jane (Brad); loving grandchildren Lauren, Beth, Sarah, Emily, Matthew, Amanda, and Nolan; brothers Duncan (Valerie), Bert (Shirley); sister Sylvia Snelgrove, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Roland, known to his family and friends as Rollie, was born on September 15, 1938, in Old Perlican NL. He grew up in Grates Cove where he left at the age of 15 to attend Memorial University and later graduated from Nova Scotia Tech with an Engineering degree at the age of 20.
In 1960, Rollie moved to Montreal for employment, and it is there he met the love of his life. Rollie and Beverley moved back to St. John’s in 1963 where they began their wonderful life together and raised their 3 children.
In 1993 Rollie retired and they set up their second residence in Bradenton, Florida. He was fortunate enough to spend his summers golfing with the fearless foursome (Lloyd Cooke, Reg Whitten, Scott Mercer) which started at Bally Haly in 1975. They continued their golfing in the winters as they brought their talents or lack there of to Peridia Country Club. His love of golf carried over onto his residence on Ottawa Street as his lawn rivalled the greens at Bally Haly. His meticulous attention to detail could be displayed by the shine on his car. His passion for the stock market and politics kept him occupied for most of his retired years.
Most of all Rollie was a devoted husband, a proud father, and loving grandfather. He cherished his family and supported them in every aspect of their lives. He lived by example and shared his values of kindness, generosity, commitment, and acceptance. Rollie leaves behind many families and friends who were honoured to know him and blessed to be loved by him. Our memories will forever warm our hearts and we will try our best to live by his age-old adage “a still tongue is a wise head” and “you can catch more bees with honey, than vinegar”.
Our family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Peter Sceviour, Dr. Susan Macdonald, and the nurses and staff of the palliative care unit at the Miller Centre for their care and compassion during his illness.
Please join us to celebrate Rollies wonderful life. Visitation will take place at Carnell’s Funeral home from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday September 15th. Funeral service to be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel Monday, September 16th at 11 am, with an inurnment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
In keeping with Rollies generous nature, donations accepted with gratitude to Food Sharing association and the Canadian cancer society.
“That man is a success-who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much, who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of children, who has filled his niche, and accomplished his task. Who leaves the world better than he found it, who has never lacked appreciation of earths beauty or failed to express it, who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had.”
