Roderick ‘Roddy’ McInnis
1961-2023
It is with profound sadness that we announce that Roderick
Alan McInnis, of Trenton, NS, passed away on January 25, 2023, with
family by his side.
Roderick was born on January 19, 1961, at the Aberdeen
Hospital, the eldest son of Colin and Norma (Wilson) McInnis. Raised
in Trenton, he married the love of his life, Wendy (Cooke), on June
28, 1998.
Roddy began his career at Trenton Works and obtained his Red
Seal as an Industrial Mechanic Millwright. The second part of his
career was spent at Nova Scotia Power, where he loved having the
opportunity to work with his son, Sean, for the past 10 years. Roddy
was proud to share this experience with Sean, especially since it
mirrored the earliest days of his employment, when he worked alongside
his father, Collie.
In his early childhood years, Roddy lived with his family in
Toronto. This is where he established his lifelong devotion to the
Toronto Maple Leafs, and his passion for playing hockey. An avid
athlete, Roddy played (and excelled at) all kinds of sports. He
enjoyed spending a day on the greens playing golf, and never missed
the 19th hole. He played in curling tournaments and spent lively
evenings at The Bomber’s Club throwing darts. He was a
celebrated baseball pitcher, who loved recounting stories from when
his team won the provincial and Atlantic
championships.
And Roddy passed on his knowledge, too, and spoke fondly of
his time coaching hockey with best friend, Sonny Fraser. When son,
Sean, and stepson, Edison, played sports growing up, Roddy was always
supportive, encouraging them to play their best and cheering for them
every game.
Truly, Roddy’s great joy came from having a good
time with family and friends. He had a great sense of humour and
created many happy memories at the cottage in Country Harbour. The
McInnis’ are a musical family, and Roddy loved singing along
with a beverage in his hand and a smile on his face. In recent years,
Roddy and Wendy spent their summers in beautiful Port Hood, Cape
Breton, where they welcomed family and friends and enjoyed relaxing on
the beach and chatting on the deck. Everyone loved to visit Roddy and
he made friends where he went, including winter getaways to Cuba and a
fantastic trip he and Wendy took to Italy this past
fall.
Roddy will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother
and uncle. He was a great storyteller, a lover of gadgets, a loyal
friend, and a proud Trentonian.
Left to miss and mourn his loss are wife of 25 years, Wendy;
son, Sean, stepson, Edison; brother, John (Denise), sisters: Dorothy
(Diane), Colleen (Dave); mother-in-law, Beatrice; brothers-in-law:
Mike, Marty, sisters-in-law: Lynn, Karen (Bernard), Leanne (Chris);
nephews: Colin (Robyn) Andrew, Mitchell, Charlie, nieces: Erin
(Danny), Kelsey (Greg); many aunts, uncles, and cousins across the
McInnis family tree. Roddy was predeceased by his parents, Norma and
Collie McInnis.
There will be a visitation on Sunday, January 29th, from
4-7pm, at R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 73 High Street, Trenton. A funeral
service will be held under the direction of Rev. Rosemary Godin on
Monday, January 30th, at 11 am, at the First United Church, in
Trenton.
Donations in memory of Roddy McInnis may be made to Trenton
Minor Sports.
«Grief, I’ve
learned, is really just love. It’s all the love you want to give, but
cannot. All of that unspent love gathers in the corners of your eyes,
the lump in your throat, and in the hollow part of your chest. Grief
is just love with no place to go.»
Tha Gaol Agam
Ort.
