With great sadness, we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Gerald Siegel and Barbara Gail Siegel. Sadly, Robert (Bob) passed away on Monday, February 19th, 2024, at 12:30 p.m. Bob passed peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones at the University of Alberta Hospital. Barbara (Barb) passed away on Thursday, May 2nd, 2024, at 9:00 am at the Grey Nuns Hospital.
They are survived by their daughter Cheryl (Stacey), son Shane and granddaughter Kate-Lynne. They are also survived by many extended family members and good friends they loved and tried to stay in touch with throughout the years.
Bob was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, where his family farmed. While Bob was growing up on the farm, he always helped his family as much as possible. Bob did very well in school, so his parents decided that he should move from the farm to Humboldt to continue with his education. After graduating from Humboldt Collegiate High School, he briefly worked at the Bank of Nova Scotia. Shortly after that, Bob started with West-Steel and loved his travel with them. He moved on to Wilkinson Steel in Saskatoon and worked with them until 1977. He then moved to Sherwood Park, Alberta, where he became Wilkinson Steel’s Prairie Regional Manager until he semi-retired in 1988.
Barbara was born and raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. At the age of 18, Barb began her career as a hairdresser. She worked for a few different hair salons, and when it came time for her to start her family, she started working out of the family home to be close to her two children. After Barb stopped hairdressing, she became involved with Saskatoon’s vibrant performing arts group. She spent many years behind the scenes creating costumes, make-up and hairstyles for the many plays she was involved in. When the family moved to Sherwood Park, Barb and Cheryl became involved with Walterdale Theatre.
When their children finished high school and were becoming more independent, Bob left Wilkinson Steel. Bob and Barb had always wanted to live on the west coast, so they moved to Victoria, B.C. Bob could not sit still, so he and Shane started a curbing business. Barb became involved with the Victoria Operatic Society, where she was the society’s secretary and continued sewing costumes and doing the hair and makeup for many shows. They lived in Victoria for roughly seven years until Bob wanted something more stable for income. Bob missed being a salesperson in the steel industry, so he moved to Prince George B.C, where he worked for Wilkinson Steel again. Barb did not like living on the island alone, so she moved to Prince George shortly after that.
With both children living in Edmonton, Bob and Barb decided to move back to Edmonton to retire permanently. During their retirement, they enjoyed spending time at the family cabin at Murphy Lake in Northern Saskatchewan. They spent many long weekends there taking care of the place. Bob was an avid fisherman and loved spending time surrounded by nature. Back at home in Edmonton, Bob could be seen walking with family and friends to ensure he clocked his 10,000 steps daily. Bob loved puttering in the yard and always spent time outside, rain or shine, sleet or snow, warm or cold. Barb could be found in the backyard, tending to her many flowers or reading mystery novels in the house.
There will be an Internment at the Glenwood Funeral Home & Cemetery in Sherwood Park at noon on Saturday, July 13, 2024. A celebration of life will occur at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on Ellerslie and 50th Street in Edmonton starting at 2:00 pm. This celebration will be a time for friends and family to unite, share memories, and honour Bob and Barb’s life. Please join Cheryl and Shane in celebrating their parents’ lives. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Cheryl Logan at (780) 902-8011.
