It is with deep sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Robert Stanley Millard, age 78, who passed away peacefully on October 13, 2023 at the Cape Breton Hospice Center with his loving family by his side.
Born in North Sydney on Nov 8, 1944, he was the son of the late William and Elsie (Whittle) Millard. Along with his parents, Robert was predeceased by his brother Billy; sister Debbie (MacDonald); brother in-law and close friend David MacDonald; his son Robert whom he missed every day, as well as his niece, Denise. Robert is survived by his wife of 39 years, Darlene; daughters – Wendy (Les) Millard, Tanya (Pat) Hinchey, and Janet Millard; sons – David (Val) and Billy (Ella), along with many grandchildren, all of whom he adored.
Robert always had a love for horses. He spent many years at the track where he was very much involved in harness racing. Along with his love for horses he also had a love for sports, especially his Toronto Maple Leafs and his Toronto Blue Jays. In his younger years he enjoyed playing hockey and was proud to have earned his spot in the Northside Sports Hall of Fame. More than playing the game himself, he took greater pride in watching his oldest grandson between the pipes. He could always be seen giving him the thumbs up from the stands where he sat cheering him on.
We would like to express our sincere appreciation to the amazing staff at the heart function clinic, especially Gail who always returned our calls and attended to our concerns. Also, to Dr. Lata who really had a way with dad, the only doctor appointments dad actually looked forward to going to, thank you. A heart felt thank you to the staff at the Cape Breton Hospice who cared for dad in his final weeks, especially his nurse Lenore whose care and compassion was truly exceptional.
A visitation will be held from 1 to 3p.m. on Saturday, October 28 at the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home at 107 Pleasant Street in North Sydney with a committal service immediately following at Holy Cross Cemetery with Rev. Jackie Warren officiating. In leu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, Hospice Cape Breton, or a charity of one’s choice. Strong, Stern, and as stubborn as they come right until the very end! Rest now dad, we love you, we will miss you every day until we meet again.
