It’s with deep sadness, we wish to announce that Robert “Bob” Gerald Henry Callewaert passed away at the age of 83, peacefully at home in Surrey, with family by his side on October 24, 2024.
Bob was born in Port Alberni, BC on April 10, 1941, to Leon and Cecilia Callewaert. He was the youngest of 10, and is survived by one remaining sibling, his sister Doris; his sons, James (Deena), Terry (Bonnie) and Troy (Lorie); grandchildren Megan, Taylor, Jordan and Evan; many cousins, nieces and nephews.
In his youth Bob could be found at the ballpark, and often skipped chores to watch a game. Bob later moved to the lower mainland where he raised his family and could still be found at the ballpark, coaching his sons’ ball teams. He was very proud of their accomplishments.
As a truck driver, Bob spent most of his career with Foremost Foods doing milk runs to the interior, the lower mainland and the Sunshine Coast. Bob finished out his career doing cross boarder runs with Yellow Freight and Concord Transportation. Through his trucking days his family remembers watching him participate in many truck rodeos where they proudly watched him put his driving skills to the test. The truck rodeos were a highlight and always something they looked forward to.
In his retirement Bob, once again, could be found at the ballpark where he enjoyed watching his grand daughters play ball. As a “season ticket holder”, you could find him right behind home plate cheering the granddaughters on. Bob also enjoyed camping, his favourite trips were to Oak Harbour in Washington State and Derby Reach in Langley.
Bob was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion since 1978 and was recently acknowledged for his long-time membership. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. We will all miss Bob’s wonderful sense of humour and his love of family, especially those grandkids! We are extremely grateful for the impact he had on all our lives and for the countless memories we have made and will carry with us always.
A special thanks goes out to Robert’s niece, roommate and best friend, Valerie John. Valerie made it possible for Robert to remain in his home right through his final days, and her loving care and support are greatly appreciated by his family.
As per Robert’s wishes, cremation has taken place, a celebration of life will be held in the early part of the new year, details to be advised.
Please feel free to submit a message below. We would love to hear any favorite memories or stories you would like to share.
