A Brief Overview of the Life of Bob Ainsworth
Bob was born Robert Ancil Ainsworth on December 18, 1934 in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba. He was the first born of four children, followed by Norma (1936), Betty (1938) and Marlene (1943). Bob’s parents were Carl and Edna.
He attended South Rosendale School, which was about 1 ½ miles from the family home in Lavenham, Manitoba. Norma, Betty and Bob travelled to school together, during the winter on a toboggan pulled by a dog, and sometimes, in the summer, on a cart pulled by a mule. On one cold day, the girls were in the cart covered by a blanket and Bob was driving the mule. He fell off and the mule continued to the school pulling the cart, but without Bob, leaving him to walk the remaining distance.
Bob told his children several stories from his childhood. The family dog liked to nap on the road near the farm — when Bob was riding the mule, he would sometimes drive over the dog, making it so mad that it would give chase, making for a much more exciting ride. He also talked about climbing supple young trees, holding on to the top and jumping off to allow the tree to slowly carry him down to the ground; however, one time the tree broke and he fell hard, knocking the wind out of him. In Bob’s words, “I couldn’t breathe for a week.”
Bob started working on a farm owned by his Aunt Millie and cousin Archie when he was 13. The next year, Carl built a log cabin and Bob lived with him there, helping to cut firewood and fence posts. He worked for a few months doing construction on Camp Shilo in Southern Manitoba, and then moved to work on a farm near Portage. Eventually, he got a job in Winnipeg working at a dry-cleaning plant, and that industry became his career until the early 1970’s.
Kay (nee Tina Hoeppner) and Bob met in Winnipeg and were married in Kenora, Ontario on October 22, 1955. They had five birth children, Ken (1957), Janice (1958), Carolyn (1960), Sharon (1961) and Valerie (1963). Bob and Kay adopted a fifth daughter, Jennifer, in 1982. Bob and Kay were the proud grandparents of eighteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
After moving out of the cleaning business, Bob trained for and then operated transport trucks with Reimer’s Express out of Winnipeg, travelling all over Canada and into the United States. After he left highway trucking, he took a job with Imperial Oil hauling fuel in the Winnipeg area, and then worked in the yard until his retirement in the mid 1990’s.
In the late 1990’s, Bob and Kay moved to Nanaimo, British Columbia, a location they thoroughly enjoyed for about 26 years. For some of those years they lived in a modular home park with a view of the ocean.
For Bob and Kay, faith in Jesus and involvement in the church was a big part of their lives and a source of joy, comfort and community. They both had various roles in the churches they attended, and were also local representatives for SIM, an international missions organization, as well as being involved with Gideons and Sunset Glow, a seniors’ group.
Among other things, Bob is remembered for his sense of humour, his love of children, and for handing out Werther’s butterscotch candy to people of all ages!
Tina (Kay) predeceased Bob early in 2023, and he longed for the time he would be with her again. It is a comfort for Bob’s family that this time of waiting is over, and that he is now in the hands of his Saviour.
