Our mom, Rita, was born January 7, 1941. She married the love of her life, Bill, on September 12,1959. Together they raised four children: Elizabeth, Tom, Bill, and Brian. Throughout her life, Rita was steadily involved in the Roman Catholic Church, especially the Catholic Women’s League as well as an Eucharistic Minister. Rita also had a passion for helping people. Whether it was charities, donations of gifts, monetary, her time… she was always ready, willing, and able! More turkeys were cooked for Mary Queen of Peace Parish over the years than what you might find in a grocery store. She loved to shop for gifts for the festival held in Fortune Harbour, Notre Dame Bay. All proceeds supported St. Anne’s Catholic Church in this beautiful community where all our grandparents came from. Oh so many people were happy after winning her “Spirits Basket”.
Rita had a strong passion for music. After begging for a couple of years, at the tender age of 13, she received her very first accordion from her parents for Christmas. How many times did mom tell us how she learned how to play “Oh! Susanna” by ear and excitedly woke up Nan and Grandad Byrne in the wee hours of the morning to play the song! Needless to say that did not go over well. Next instruments to «learn by ear» were the piano/organ/keyboard.
It was not unusual for her to break out her accordion and play a tune and sing for whomever was around. In the late 90’s mom owned six to eight accordions at one time. Her grandson, Jonathan, was thrilled to try them all out one summer.
The last 22 months of her life she resided at Lanes Retirement Home and Assisted Living in Airport Heights. Rita decided to become Lanes evening entertainment since they did not have evening programs. Three to five nights a week anywhere from an hour and a half to two and a half hours she played and sang for the residents and staff – sometimes until her fingers bled. She even played for ninety minutes two nights before she passed away.
Rita was always down for a party – celebrating life only like she knew how to do! This summer Rita attended the Fortune Harbour Garden Party and stayed until 1:30am. Rita will be greatly missed by her family, friends and the residents and staff of Lanes Assisted Living. We are sure many stories will be told about her including «Rita’s Cancellation Service» and her plane trip to Calgary one Christmas. She had a way of making people feel better about themselves through her music, storytelling, sense of humor, and playing cards.
Rita knew how to live a good life and celebrate her gifts with others. Please join us in an Irish Musical Toast for our Mom Rita (Byrne) Power: “A Mother’s Love Is A Blessing”, “The Orange and The Green”, «An Island to an Island», “Black Velvet Band” and «The Blue Velvet Band» – Cheers Rita (Mom)
