Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that the family of Dick (Richard) Varga announces that he passed away in the early morning of August 22, 2023.
Dick was born in Taber on July 18, 1950 to Emelia Marie (Baines) and Bertalon Varga. The family moved to Raymond where he started school and then to Picture Butte where Dick graduated from high school and where he met and married Delores Courtorelle. They raised three sons, Richard, Michael and Timothy.
Dick began attending the University of Lethbridge when, due to a motor vehicle accident, he was no longer able to continue working at the Picture Butte Sugar Factory. Dick not only attended classes at the UofL but also worked in Student Services, advocating for students with special needs. His reputation as a tenacious advocate led to his move from the UofL to managing the Citizens Resource Centre where he worked for many years. He was involved with various community organizations and served on the Lethbridge Handibus Association’s board of directors. Prior to his retirement, Dick worked for several years with the team at Godlonton Realty.
Dick was a long-time patron of the Lethbridge Public Library. He would spend many Saturday afternoons there with his boys. To say he loved books and newspapers is an understatement. He was a well-read and affable man, willing to discuss just about any topic with other library patrons, with fellow coffee drinkers at this favorite coffee haunts, and with family and friends.
It was during his time at UofL, that Dick established his friendships with Yvonne Trainer and Gerry Dubinski; his friendship with Florence Venhuis began when they both served on the Handibus Board. Dick befriended Orien Bourn and Brad Ellingson after he joined the Lethbridge Strong Arms basketball team. Dick appreciated his friends and enjoyed spending time visiting and reminiscing with them.
It was important to Dick to stay connected with his siblings and their families. It was his family that filled Dick’s heart and often occupied his thoughts. He was keenly interested in what was going on with his sons and their families; he treasured time spent with them on the phone, online or in person. He cherished the visits with his granddaughter Jasmine and enjoyed watching her grow up. He was grateful for the cuddles and time spent with his granddaughters Grace and Inge. Sadly, his grandson Nathaniel has been estranged from the family.
Dick leaves behind his sons Richard (Sara), Michael (Kendra) and Timothy; his grandchildren; his sister Rita (Hank)Tarasoff and numerous nephews and nieces. Dick was predeceased by both of his parents, his brothers Luke and George, as well as his sister Laurie.
Dick – father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and colleague – will be missed by all.
A celebration of Dick’s life is planned for the spring of 2024.
