Remembering Ross
Rev. Alexander “Ross” MacDonald, B.A, B.D., M.Div.
With sadness, the family of Ross MacDonald announces his passing on May 27, 2024 in Willow Lodge Home for Special Care in Tatamagouche, N.S.
Born on June 26, 1941 in New Glasgow, N.S., he was a son of the late Alexander and Caroline (Ross) MacDonald. Ross is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth (Cameron) MacDonald, Tatamagouche; his sons, Ian (Nancy), Paul (Christie), Kent, all of Tatamagouche, Peter (Pat), Kingston, N.S; grandsons, Randy, Colin, Ben, Liam and Jack; brother, James (Anne) MacDonald; sister, Patricia (John) Yerxa; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Ross was predeceased by his parents; daughter in law, Jane (MacEachern) MacDonald; father and mother-in-law, George and Dolina (Munro) Cameron as well as sister in law, Mildred (Cameron) Pushie.
Ross was a graduate of New Glasgow High School, Mount Allison University, Pine Hill Divinity School and completed Post Graduate Studies at Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado. Ross worked briefly in banking in New Glasgow and Gander, NFLD before enrolling in Mount Allison to study Theology. Ross was ordained as a Minister of the United Church of Canada in 1965. He served the church in various capacities – ministering tirelessly in four pastoral charges while meeting many people who eventually became lifelong friends.
Ross later joined the staff of the Tatamagouche Centre as staff associate and later moved on to the position of director. Over 14 years, Ross made a lasting impact on the centre with skillful leadership, dedication and expertise.
In 1990, Ross became Administrator of the Windsor Elms, the United Church Senior Citizens Home in Windsor, N.S. He spent the next 12 years improving the building, ministering to many delightful elders in his care while also serving as President of the Continuing Care Association of Nova Scotia. He conferred with the Department of Health to support and encourage change in ways to advance the quality of life of seniors in homes for special care.
Upon retirement, Ross and Elizabeth moved to Truro to become closer to their Tatamagouche family and enjoyed spending leisure time at the cottage in Pictou County. Ross continued to enjoy fiddle music which began while in Windsor with the Kings Fiddlers and later on in Truro, playing at nursing homes with the Good Time Fiddlers.
During this time, Ross was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, changing his life in many ways. He dealt with it in his usual quiet way and carried on. After many years advocating for seniors, Elizabeth became his caregiver. On arrival at Willow Lodge, he was welcomed with love and respect. The Eden Alternative is truly alive at the Lodge, supporting and encouraging elders in the caring community that it always has been. After many years working on behalf of the church and community, life ended for Ross, where he was secure and comfortable, surrounded by caring staff, family and friends. We, the family wish to extend sincere gratitude to the entire staff at Willow Lodge and Dr. Dan MacDonald for their exceptional care and concern for Ross and his family. Thank you also to Julie Tattrie and all who took part in the delightful tribute to Ross at his death, we are so grateful, and to Cory Lunn at Coulter’s Funeral Home for your compassion and guidance during this time.
A Memorial Service for Ross will be held Friday, June 21 at 2pm in Sharon United Church, Tatamagouche with Rev. Linton Worrell officiating. Reception to follow the service. Burial will take place in St. Andrew’s Cemetery, Gairloch, Pictou, Co. Donations in Ross’ memory may be made to Willow Lodge or to Sharon United Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche.
